Netscape 2.01 vs Apache 1.2b7 (fwd)

Seen on Usenet.

I've read user comments that b8 is a significant improvement over
b7, so mybe he needs to start there.

Netscape Enterprise 2.01 vs Apache 1.2.b7
We have 2 identical machines. Ultra 1s 192mb RAM
Netscape on one, Apache on the other.
Using Cisco's LocalDirector to direct traffic based on least
number of connections.
Netscape has it's DNS lookup turned off and runs away from the
Apache server in the number of hits. Turn on DNS and the Apache
wins, hands down.
Now I turned off DNS lookup on the Apache server, expecting some
great increase but to my dismay, the Netscape server is still
rocking meaning it still services connections quicker.
Netscape recommended KeepAlives turned off so I also turned it
off the Apache server, no change.
Both machines have the same Docroot and such.
I just expected the Apache server to fly with DNS lookup turned
off, I was disappointed.
Before I move to the Netscape servers, anyone have more
recommendations on speeding the Apache server up?
(Yes, I'm aware of even more variables between the two but
I have tried to make them as equal as possible.)

They are probably also not noticing things like the footprint of
the Netscape server compared to Apache, most of the netscape servers
I have run take 12-16 megs (Solaris 2.5.1, netscape enterprise with
the patch to fix the threading problem) and Apache doesn't usually
need more than about 2. (per child of course). I can still make
a server populated with netscape daemons grind to a painful halt
with a little forking telnet/get script, but I saturate the
eithernet well before the server starts bugging out when using
Apache.

Speaking of docs, sometime when I am feeling braindead but bored I may try
to do a sweep through all of the documentation to fix up some of the
completely-outdated things that sound silly now.

Sounds good to me. Then we can add some benchmarks showing the oldest
NCSA we can find running from inetd beating everything else around.
Hey, I can make a perfectly repeatable test that shows that. <g>

I've been meaning to do the same thing... will have a bit more free time
starting thursday assuming I don't drown, but it is a bit down on my
priority list. If I feel like writing silly docs suEXEC may come first...

No, their config did look like

MinSpareServers 24
MaxSpareServers 48
MaxRequestsPerChild 30

(with MaxRequestsPerChild increased to 200 after I suggested raising it)

The biggest problem with this one that I see is that all he is saying is
Netscape "services connections quicker". Hell, I'll buy that if he is
serving 2 byte documents since Apache outputs twice the volume of headers
that most versions of Netscape's server do. I asked what metrics he was
using, but he skipped that question...

Some metrics (eg. time for first packet of response to arrive, which some
magazines _have_ used) are darn misleading because sending a bunch of
small packets will decrease that time interval, but will lead to overall
worse performance.

And (flame me!) try -DNO_LINGCLOSE if upgrading to 1.2b8 (or preferably
1.2b9-dev) doesn't even things up.

But actually my guess is that if you were to look at their config it looks
like this:

StartServers 5
MinSpareServers 5
MaxSpareServers 10

rather than something reasonable for the load they're seeing. This has
been my experience with other "benchmarks". Maybe I should spend the
afternoon doing documentation...
