Vote for thrift 0.2.0 rc0

Hi all,

I'd like to propose a vote to make the following tarball the official Thrift
0.2.0 release:

http://people.apache.org/~todd/thrift-0.2.0-incubating-rc0.tar.gz
with GPG signature:
http://people.apache.org/~todd/thrift-0.2.0-incubating-rc0.tar.gz.asc
and md5sum: 9958c57c402c02171ba0bcc96183505c

This was built from
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/thrift/branches/0.2.x at revision
887836 using svn export and then running bootstrap.sh on an Ubuntu Karmic
box.

Please ensure that it builds and configures correctly on your target
systems, and give a +1 if everything looks good to you. We need three +1s
from committers before we can send it along to the Incubator PMC for
approval.

I've configured and compiled successfully on CentOS 5 and Ubuntu Karmic. I
also verified that the Incubation disclaimer is present at DISCLAIMER. So,
I'll start the voting with a +1 from me.

-Todd

That's disturbing - not that you're going ahead, but that it's only me. :-)

But something funky is happening with my system. Time Machine started reporting errors yesterday, and my Super Duper backup that goes to a totally separate disk drive started last night at 11:30 and still hasn't completed. There's something wrong...

Hi Rush,

It looked to me like you're getting out-of-memory errors. Others have tried
the tests and they seem to pass for them.

I'd like to push forward on this release, and if we can track down your
issues, release a fix in 0.2.1 or 0.3.0.

Hi Bryan,

Did you run "make check"? It's failing for me on 10.6.2.

Ah. Oops.

I tried again without the bootstrap, and everything build just fine.
I ran the java and ruby tests, which all passed.

You shouldn't run bootstrap on a release candidate.
Try unpacking again and just running configure.

+1 (IPMC) after verifying the sig and reviewing r887812 and r888241.
I did not run any tests on the tarball, but my vote is based primarily
on the resolution of the licensing issues. Here's my signature on the
tarball if you'd like to use it (at your discretion):

With my system running Python 2.6.1 (so that the make step completes successfully) I find that make check fails.

I have also run this where I specify --with-boost=my/boost/install/directory, because we have a boost installation checked into our svn repository that gets checked out as part of the development tree checkout. I get the same result with that build.

If I go look at the source, the lines that fail they all invocations of BOOST_CHECK or BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL. But the failure called out for line 389 is not the only usage in the function. There is one that looks like it must get executed at line 374. Same thing with the failure at line 519. BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL is used at lines 516 and 617 as well and those don't fail.

Here are the transcripts for "configure" and "make check". The failures are at the end:

There have been a few oddities after the move to Snow Leopard, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I'm afraid not. See my subsequent post.

I think this must have been some peculiarity of your nonstandard install. I
grepped for "no-long-double" and it's nowhere in the source. I bet the
build_ext task you had installed was inserting this parameter which isn't
supported by the version of gcc you're running post-upgrade.

Given you had success with the standard install, is that a +1 from you?

So far we have +1s from Todd (ie me), Jake, Bryan, and Joe. So that's 3
committers and one IPMC. As I understand it we need two more IPMC +1s after
emailing the incubator-general list. I'll take care of posting there towards
the end of the day today.

Thanks

I tried it on OS X 10.6.2 and it failed. For historical reasons, I'm running Python 2.5.1 as a custom installation. After this build failed, I reconfigured my system so that I'm running Python 2.6.1. When I configured and ran make with that config it completed successfully.

I don't know whether this is worth worrying about. I installed Python 2.5.1 under OS X 10.5, when the version you got with the OS was 2.4.x, so this is probably a corner case. But I'll report it anyway.

Here's the configure and build transcript for the failed (Python 2.5.1) case. I didn't edit anything out:

Re: Vote for thrift 0.2.0 rc0

+1 as well. I tried it on some internal stuff that was running off of an
OLD version of thrift, and it just worked.

Twitter thanks you, Todd :)

+1. Clean download followed by configure + make yielded no issues for me.

+1. I reproduced the build procedure and got a tarball with no nontrivial
differences. In the long term, I'd like to migrate to "make dist", but there's
no rush. Also, there are some empty directories in there that I never noticed
because git ignores them. Might be nice to rmdir them.
