checksum error when tarring xercesJ-2 binaries

After downloading binaries for xerces J-2, I used the command:

gzip -dc Xerces-J-bin.2.2.1.tar.gz | tar xfv -

It untarred many of the files, but then I got the error (along with the last 
item that was in the list):

x xerces-
2_2_1/docs/javadocs/xerces2/org/apache/xerces/impl/xs/traversers/package-
frame.html, 1065 bytes, 3 tape blocks                                         
tar: directory checksum error
