Proposal: NetCAT 9.0
Hi all,
Jiri Kovalsky (Jirka) and I, both from Oracle, have had a discussion about
NetCAT. Jirka as many of you know has led the NetBeans Community Acceptance
Testing (NetCAT) program over many years. This is a program for NetBeans
community volunteers to validate the upcoming release, using daily builds
to do so. They use the test specifications to test NetBeans daily builds
prior to a NetBeans release.
We'd like to move this program to Apache NetBeans because it is a valuable
part of the NetBeans ecosystem and is well-established and is a mechanism
for integrating the community with Apache NetBeans, not for NetBeans
community developers but NetBeans community testers.
NetCAT consists of the following artifacts, with how they could be handled
in Apache NetBeans:
- a mailing list, which could be netcat@netbeans.apache.org
- daily builds for usage by NetCAT community volunteers for purposes
described above, which should be no problem since we understand that daily
builds are available for Apache committer purposes
- categories in Bugzilla (to be JIRA at Apache NetBeans) where issues can
be filed, I will receive these from Jirka (can't simply copy and paste the
current ones, since some are obsolete, Jirka will propose a reduced list
that I will integrate into Apache NetBeans JIRA)
- Wiki for describing the program, the schedule, etiquette -- no problem,
we have a Wiki already
- Surveys -- community acceptance survey (for official 'Go' from community)
and satisfaction survey for after the program has completed, to gather
feedback about NetCAT itself -- here we could use SurveyMonkey and/or
Google Forms (the latter is in use for this already)
- co-ordinator -- Jirka will be first co-ordinator in Apache NetBeans for
NetCAT, though we'd be looking to transfer co-ordination tasks to others in
the community
The idea would be to do a NetCAT 9.0 program as soon as the 1st code
donation is in Apache, which should be during the next few weeks. Jirka and
my proposal would be to release NetBeans IDE 9.0 out of the Apache
incubator, i.e., as the first Apache NetBeans release, from the incubator,
since the code would include tools for Jigsaw, JShell, etc, i.e., these are
connected to JDK 9 and it would be strange to name it anything other than
9.0 under these circumstances.
Feedback welcome, input, etc, after which we can propose a full schedule
and so on.

Hi Raphael,
There are a lot of automated testing in NetBeans both unit and integration
(functional). It's possible to move mouse cursor click button and so on...
It's also possible to use integration on your own module[1].
I'm not aware of the coverture of tests in the build process.
I personally believe In both user testing and automated testing.
A user or a tester may have an issue with 4k display on a particular setup
that will never be caught by an automated test.
Automated test will "guarantee" that you will get a binary that offer
function with no regression and that you can put your testing effort on more
high level issue.
Synergy is the point.

Eric

That's a part where I'm really interested in. As you know, I'm a passionate
QA. Well I'm not a fan of test cases for manual testing, expect for new
features. But test case are good to get new users involved.
Do you have any automated testings for NetBeans?

At Apache there is no Oracle and Community anymore. There is only one
community. If it helps to get a overview picture, you can use SurveyMonkey
or whatever. But for a release you have to vote anyway and this happened
normally on the dev mailing list of the project. And after the Incubator
will do the final vote. But the Incubator normally don't take a close look
to technical issues. Incubator cares more about the legal one.

It's good that you want to drag responsibilities outside Oracle. The best
way to do this, is that Oracle starts be part of the community. So we
looking all forward to the code donation.
Thanks for this proposal.

Not exactly...Oracle employees are welcome to get involved in the
Apache NetBeans community *as long as they act as themselves*, as
companies and organizations cannot be "represented" in Apache
projects. It's all about individuals.
I think that's abundantly clear by now, just wanted to set this
straight in case people are reading this who were not part of previous

A link to a placeholder page, to be finalized and filled out once we have
