Can't get samples working in Tomcat6

Hi,

I'm on Mac Snow Leopard. I installed Apache Tomact 6.0.28 from MacPorts.
I deleted the ROOT directory, downloaded
shindig-server-1.1-BETA5-incubating.war, renamed it ROOT.war, and copied
it into the webapps directory. I restarted Tomcat and it unpacked the WAR.

Tomcat responds on localhost:8080, but I get a 404 no matter what URL I
try. For example,

http://localhost:8080/social/rest/people/john.doe

Yields a 404.

I have tried this several different times in different ways, even
uninstalling, cleaning, and reinstalling Tomcat, as well as trying to
deploy via the Tomcat Manager with a shindig context, and nothing works.
When I used the Tomcat Manager, it would deploy and unpack the WAR, but
failed to start. I can find nothing in the logs. Very strange.

Is there a step I'm missing? Has anyone else encountered a similar
problem? I'd really like to get the sample app up and running.

Also, is there a way to search the mailing list archives other than by
using Google? If so, Apache has hidden it pretty well. I can't find it.

TIA,

Chas.
