When I try to save a word processing document, the dialog box comes up as
normal, but before I can select where to save it, the "spinning wheel of death"
comes up and I have to wait. After several minutes I get the message that it
"cannot locate the server G5" that it "may be missing or unavailable". I can
click the button in the message box, but the wheel continues to spin, I can do
nothing with Open Office, and if I just wait the same message eventually comes
back. Over and over again until I force quit.
I have looked everywhere for a setting that would direct the program to save
(for some unknown reason) the files to another computer (there is no such
machine) and have been unable to find out why it would think it needs to look
for another machine at all.

I cannot use the program as it is as I cannot save my docs. I can write and
print them, but cannot save them.

The behavior what you described is not typical. Calc works fine for many
users with OS X.
A very large proportion of crashes in OpenOffice are cured by deleting or
renaming the User Profile. Details about it are given in:

Please report back the outcome of your testing, so this Issue may be closed or
progressed as necessary - otherwise the issue may be Resolved as Invalid in the
future.
