Apache Shiro Logo Design Contest - $295 prize!
Hi all,
My employer has authorized me to sponsor a logo design contest on
99designs.com for a new Apache Shiro logo:

There are 3 days remaining for submissions. Votes may continue to be
held for 7 days thereafter.
The winner will be awarded $295.00 USD (via 99designs.com) and the
logo will be immediately donated to the ASF where it will be available
under the Apache 2.0 license.
If you don't wish to enter the contest - and don't want a shot at some
free $ ;) - you can alternatively submit logo designs to this Jira
issue:

The reason for the contest: We have had a number of issues with the
old logo: we can't find the old .psd files to modify to meet ASF
naming requirements, and we also haven't been able to contact the
designer we've used years ago to help. Also, the existing logo was
not designed by a person with a CLA on file with the ASF, so there is
gray area as to its use now that we're a part of Apache. By hosting a
competition, the community can vote on their favorite, in classic ASF
fashion.

Yes, absolutely. It is made very clear in the contest brief (aka
description) that each designer reads before creating a submission.
Also, 99designs mandates to all designers that the contest holder
(payer) can do whatever they want with the winning logo - it is 100%
the contest holder's property to do with as they please.
This is what allows us to remove any gray area about the existing logo
- my employer will donate the winning logo to the ASF, free and clear.

Votes should be on the mailing lists so we can keep a running tally.
You can leave feedback for me on any of the numbered submissions and
I'll just relay them to the logo designer in 99designs - you don't
have to wait for the contest to end. (And yes, you can vote for a
logo but say stuff like "I think the color should be foo instead" - it
is easy for the designer to come up with a few color variations).
The best way to go about this is to vote for the logo style/theme
first and foremost - colors and fonts can be changed easily.
And thanks for your feedback - this is exactly the kind of stuff we
should be talking about and brainstorming on :)

Oh, just realized that #138 and #139 are not floppy disks, they are
castles. Still, they look too much like a floppy disk to me from a

Just a quick note - the 99designs contest submissions end in 3 days.
I'll post an actual [VOTE] thread after that time so everyone can
actually place real votes for their favorites. If we started voting
before then, we could miss submissions over the next 3 days that might
also be very good.

feedback and rate each design during the contest. I see that you are
already rating them. But I'm curious how or if you are going to get
community feedback to the designers before the contest is over. It's
too bad there isn't some way to do a "community vote" on 99designs so

At the moment, in order of preference, I like designs #97, #9 (but in
blue not red), #183, and #165. Blue seems like a better choice to me
than red, as it seems more soothing and trustworthy. Red seems like
you'll be putting out fires. I like #183 when it is small, but not so
much the large version, as the lines don't seem to line up too well.
If it was cleaned up, I might like it better. I really do NOT like all
the ones that contain a floppy disk icon.

Great idea Les, and thanks to your employer for the contribution!
I've used 99designs before and it really helps to give the designers
feedback and rate each design during the contest. I see that you are
already rating them. But I'm curious how or if you are going to get
community feedback to the designers before the contest is over. It's
too bad there isn't some way to do a "community vote" on 99designs so
that the community could participate in the rating of each design. I
wonder if crowdspring.com has that feature?
So should we just cast our votes via email? Should we give feedback
before the contest is over, or wait until it has completed?
