502 Bad Gateway

I have the following set up for Subversion 1.3.2 (r19776) on Ubuntu 
Linux 6.06:
Internet -------> Apache/HTTPS/vhost[1] ---mod_proxy---> 
Apache/HTTP/vhost/mod_dav_svn[2]

When I make a request to the machine [1] where I have done a svn copy, I 
receive a response 502 Bad Gateway. When I make the same request to 
machine [2] it succeeds. Googling around reveals a bunch of explanations 
- all specific to my particular set up, but none are very useful at 
describing the "actual" problem. Some say it is mod_proxy, others say it 
is the certificate (domain name mismatch?), but I cannot be sure and I'm 
hesitant to start guessing for fear of The Red Herring.

The reason I'd like to know the problem is so that I can devise a 
solution and/or workaround. Some say to use HTTP instead of using HTTPS 
(which is unacceptable for me). I can't even do server-side copies as a 
workaround. Can anyone provide something specific that would easily 
assist me in finding a suitable problem to this problem?
