Version 1.2.3: Using fsfs but still getting Berkeley DB error

Hi
We've downloaded and built Subversion 1.2.3 on SUSE v9.1. We don't want to
use Berkeley DB, so we create repositories for the fsfs type. However, when
doing a svn list, or svn mkdir with a svn+ssh type url, we get the following
error:

svn: Berkeley DB error while opening 'nodes' table for filesystem
/usr/local/svnroot/test/db:
No such file or directory

Running svnserve with --version gives:

svnserve, version 1.2.3 (r15833)
   compiled Nov 9 2005, 07:29:31

Copyright (C) 2000-2005 CollabNet.
Subversion is open source software, see http://subversion.tigris.org/
This product includes software developed by CollabNet
(http://www.Collab.Net/).

The following repository back-end (FS) modules are available:

* fs_fs : Module for working with a plain file (FSFS) repository.

Running svn with --version gives:

svn, version 1.2.3 (r15833)
   compiled Nov 9 2005, 07:29:31

The following repository access (RA) modules are available:

* ra_dav : Module for accessing a repository via WebDAV (DeltaV) protocol.
  - handles 'http' scheme
* ra_svn : Module for accessing a repository using the svn network protocol.
  - handles 'svn' scheme
* ra_local : Module for accessing a repository on local disk.
  - handles 'file' scheme

When using the file scheme in a shell, it works. But this is not good
enough. We need to use svn+ssh. Can anyone help us, please?
Regards
