[users@httpd] .htaccess

I have heard that you can password protect a website using .htaccess
without using .htpasswd does anyone know if there is any validity to
this.

Yes.  You can use one of the other authentication modules which are
set up differently in the .htaccess file.  mod_auth_db is one example.
