I implemented the following workaround:
When a validation error regarding title, rights, or creator occurs, the value of
the "file" parameter is removed. This way, the usecase complains that a file has
to be chosen.
I agree that this behaviour is confusing for the user, because she had already
chosen a file. But I see no other solution because the value of the file upload
field just can't be passed to the next screen.

Yes, I can confirm it.

This seems to happen only for the "file" entry. IIRC you can't pass this value
on to the next screen because of security issues - the server may not set a
default value for the <input type="file"/>. Please correct me if I'm wrong. What
can we do about it?

the npe issue seems to be fixed. thanks!
i did a quick web search, and it seems there is indeed no way to predefine the
contents of an <imput type="file"/>.
two options come to mind:
* use ajax for the usecase framework (for some future release)
* do the sanity checks on the client side with javascript w/o advancing the usecase
both would work by leaving the file dialog as it is. no big deal, though.
certainly nothing for 1.4.0
as to making rights and title optional: we should define "instant lazy consensus
= on" :)

does not work for me. i still get the same exception. the only thing that has
visibly changed is that the current user is used as the default creator.
(just updated, my revision here is 412530)
steps to reproduce:
* browse, select a file.
* do *not* fill in the required fields
* hit "new asset"
* do as the error message tells you, e.g. fill in the missing stuff.
* hit "new asset"
booom!
issues:
1. npe as described above
2. previous entries are forgotten when the user is re-prompted for missing data.
3. rights and title are still mandatory (i liked your proposal on the ml to
change those to optional)

i just reproduced the issue with index.html?lenya.usecase=tab.assets. so it's a

sorry, hit return too early. here's the bug description:
try to insert an image with bxe and don't fill out all required fields. click
"new asset". you will get a warning in red saying "please enter xxxx". any
action after that results in a null pointer exception as quoted above.
an additional issue is that the already entered values are lost when the warning
message appears.

make creator, rights and title optional and change creator default to id
instead of name.
in addition to making the form fields optional as discussed, i decided to
change the default value for "creator" from username to userid. if you don't
like it, change it back.
