I copied a slide from the sidebar slide sorter with a right click copy command.

I went to paste it in Thunderbird and it pasted in the wrong slide.

It was a slide near the end of the document. I tried copying a slide near the
beginning and it seemed to work as it should.

A slide can't be copy/paste only in a presentation software.
Thunderbird is a e-mailer.
If you want to do this, export your slide into picture format (png, jpg...)
