Cannot get SVN 1.5 HTTPS server working...
Hi,
First of all I'm running Ubuntu Server v8.04. My checkouts are being
tested on a separate machine on my LAN, which is running Windows XP.
I'm using SVN from the command line on my windows machine.
To begin setting up HTTP + SSL on my linux server for SVN, I read this
guide and followed it mostly exactly:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=51753
Because 'apache2-ssl-certificate' is missing on my ubuntu server box
(for unknown reasons), I did a search and found this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apache2/+bug/77675/comments/47
On the step in the first link that requires that you run
'apache2-ssl-certificate', I visited the second link above and
performed those steps as well. My SVN repository is at /svn_root
instead of where the location is in the first link's steps. A couple
of the steps in the second link conflicted with steps in the first
link, so I ignored the duplicate/redundant steps in link 1 as
necessary.
When I try to connect to the linux server after finishing the tutorial
from my windows machine on the LAN, I run this command:
svn ls https://server/svn/personal
'server' here is the domain name of my server on the LAN, and
/personal is my repository at /svn_root/personal on my server.
Running the above command results in this:
svn: Could not open the requested SVN filesystem
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Thanks for the
help in advance.

I just did:
dpkg --list
and I see:
rc mod-dav-svn 1.5.0-rc9 Apache server module for Subversion server.
So, this must mean I have the correct version, right? Now, before I
ever started building SVN 1.5, I grabbed the subversion 1.4.6 from
apt-get. Perhaps it left over some old mod-dav-svn stuff? I only see 1
mod-dav-svn in dpkg --list.

Sorry, I cannot really help you with this as I've never had that problem.
However, I can give you "general troubleshooting advice": If you have a
problem, you try to think of possible causes for this problem: If you
can think of more than one, try to eliminate one by one to see if it
solves the problem. Duh... :-)
In your case, Apache cannot read the repository format.
Possible causes:
1) Apache
2) Repository format
:-)
Elimination strategies:
2) Create a new repository ONE THE MACHINE itself, in the svn_root
directory. This should eliminate most possible problems with the
repository. Considering the creation of a repository only takes 10
seconds, this is a good approach. If you still have the same problem,
try this:
1) Apache: Try to find out which exact version of mod_dav_svn is
installed. You can do that in several ways. I'd start with looking at
the "Server"-Header returned by Apache. It can look something like this:
Server: Apache/2.2.8 (Win32) DAV/2 SVN/1.4.6 PHP/5.2.5 mod_python/3.3.1
Python/2.5 mod_ssl/2.2.8 OpenSSL/0.9.8g
(you can do:
telnet localhost 80[Enter]
GET / HTTP/1.0[Enter][Enter]
to get the header).
If you can't get the header, look at the mods_available directory, find
the conf-file for subversion, look which *.so file is included and tell
us date and size of that file.
Good luck!
P.S.: I changed the subject line because this really isn't related to
SSL and not even to the previous questions...

Anyone have any idea how I can get this working? Below is a copy of
the commands I typed and the results of those commands:

It was created with version 1.5RC7. I did the svn verify on the repo,
and everything was fine. This was one of the first things I did after
I moved it over.

When moving a repository from one OS to another, and especially from
one processor architecture to another (don't know if that applies
here), you should use "svnadmin dump" and "svnadmin load" instead of
just moving the repository directory. Note that the dump/load does
not preserve locks, nor the contents of your config or hooks
directories. It only copies revisions.
To see whether your repository is ok, you should probably "svnadmin
verify" it. If that reports no errors, then you're probably fine...
What version of svn was the repository created with?

Ahh, sorry! I forgot to mention one more thing:
The repository I have was copied from one created via VisualSVN Server
on Windows. I didn't want to lose my repository contents, so I copied
the repo directory over. I don't think this is an issue, since before
I tried using HTTP + SVN, I was using SVN+SSH and I was able to do
checkouts perfectly fine. Just thought I'd mention it.

I downloaded the Subversion 1.5 tarball and installed it that way. I
didn't grab mod_dav_svn from anywhere else that I know of. What
version of mod_dav_svn do I need and where do I get it?

How did you install Subversion 1.5?
It's not in the Ubuntu repositories, is it?
I guess you installed mod_dav_svn from the Ubuntu repositories (which
are at 1.4.x afaik) and created your repositories in Subversion 1.5?
So you'd need to update your mod_dav_svn from your subversion
directory... (don't know where to find it, sorry)

I think you have an older mod_dav_svn around. Your repository was
created with a newer version of subversion than your mod_dav_svn, and
your mod_dav_svn doesn't understand the newer repository format.

Not sure what some of the errors mean in the error.log file. Help is
appreciated!

I see. Sorry for the confusion. My /etc/apache2/httpd.conf is

Sorry, I actually pasted the wrong file in that last email. I think
the file you wanted to see was in
/etc/apache2/mods-available/dav_svn.conf:
# dav_svn.conf - Example Subversion/Apache configuration
#
# For details and further options see the Apache user manual and
# the Subversion book.
#
# NOTE: for a setup with multiple vhosts, you will want to do this
# configuration in /etc/apache2/sites-available/*, not here.
# <Location URL> ... </Location>
# URL controls how the repository appears to the outside world.
# In this example clients access the repository as http://hostname/svn/
# Note, a literal /svn should NOT exist in your document root.
<Location /svn>
# Uncomment this to enable the repository
DAV svn
# Set this to the path to your repository
#SVNPath /svn_root
# Alternatively, use SVNParentPath if you have multiple repositories under
# under a single directory (/var/lib/svn/repo1, /var/lib/svn/repo2, ...).
# You need either SVNPath and SVNParentPath, but not both.
SVNParentPath /svn_root
# Access control is done at 3 levels: (1) Apache authentication, via
# any of several methods. A "Basic Auth" section is commented out
# below. (2) Apache <Limit> and <LimitExcept>, also commented out
# below. (3) mod_authz_svn is a svn-specific authorization module
# which offers fine-grained read/write access control for paths
# within a repository. (The first two layers are coarse-grained; you
# can only enable/disable access to an entire repository.) Note that
# mod_authz_svn is noticeably slower than the other two layers, so if
# you don't need the fine-grained control, don't configure it.
# Basic Authentication is repository-wide. It is not secure unless
# you are using https. See the 'htpasswd' command to create and
# manage the password file - and the documentation for the
# 'auth_basic' and 'authn_file' modules, which you will need for this
# (enable them with 'a2enmod').
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Subversion Repository"
AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/dav_svn.passwd
Require valid-user
# To enable authorization via mod_authz_svn
#AuthzSVNAccessFile /etc/apache2/dav_svn.authz
# The following three lines allow anonymous read, but make
# committers authenticate themselves. It requires the 'authz_user'
# module (enable it with 'a2enmod').
#<LimitExcept GET PROPFIND OPTIONS REPORT>
#Require valid-user
#</LimitExcept>

http://svnbook.red-bean.com/nightly/en/svn.serverconfig.httpd.html
Given that you know the book, I assume you've read this section?
What I mean is something like
<Location /repos>
DAV svn
SVNPath /var/svn/repository
</Location>
or
<Location /svn>
DAV svn
# any "/svn/foo" URL will map to a repository /var/svn/foo
SVNParentPath /var/svn
</Location>

Those seem to be tools in the Debian package.
I've never used those, I prefer to edit the Apache configuration directly.
At least then I know what's happening :-)
Well. whatever. As long as they work...

Good.

Which tells us that the problem is not at all related to the SSL
configuration, right?

That doesn't make a difference (at the moment).
> I don't know where it's getting "MrDoomMaster" from
If you don't specify a user on the command line, the client tries to
guess a user - I think it's either a user you've used before or your
local (Windows) user. If authentication fails with that user, it asks
for a different user.
> as I only setup "robert" as a user in /etc/apache2/dav_svn.passwd.
Well, yes. But the server doesn't (and shouldn't!!!) tell your client
which are valid users... The client is supposed to know that!
Please show us the section from your Apache-configuration where you set
up Subversion.
It should probably be a LOCATION-directive.
You DID configure Subversion, right?

Well, I did some playing around and I think I managed to disable SSL.
I did: "a2dissite ssl" and "atdismod ssl" and nothing else. Apache
seemed to restart fine.
I then went to my windows machine again and did this from the command line:
C:\>svn ls http://server/svn/personal
Authentication realm: <http://server:80> Subversion Repository
Password for 'MrDoomMaster': **************
Authentication realm: <http://server:80> Subversion Repository
Username: robert
Password for 'robert': **************
svn: Could not open the requested SVN filesystem
As you can see from above, I'm still getting the same error message,
but I got a little further before it happened. SSL should be disabled,
right? I don't know where it's getting "MrDoomMaster" from, as I only
setup "robert" as a user in /etc/apache2/dav_svn.passwd.

Well, in that case...
one more reason to do it step by step, isn't it?
> I'm not sure how to

If you have to do that, you've done something wrong anyway.
The HTTPS and the HTTP - configurations are separate. You're not
supposed to "add SSL to HTTP", you normally "set up HTTPS".
I've done this many times on Windows, but only twice on Linux so far.
Incidentally, the last time was Ubuntu 8.04 (beta). Only a local test
system, though.
I set it up, made sure it works, then never used it again :-)
As far as I remember, setting up https was relatively easy, but setting
up client certificates caused me a bit of a headache... don't remember
why, though...
Depending on what and how much you've already done, you can always
remove (purge) and re-install Apache to get a clean starting point...
Maybe you want to make a copy of the config files before you do that...

It's 2.2

I'd go with 2.2 by now. It's been out for a while and it's default on
Ubuntu...

Thanks, I might try this. I'm new with linux so it's going to take me
a very long time to figure out how to do this. I'm not sure how to
reverse my changes, though (how to remove SSL from HTTP).

I installed "apt-get install apache2", not sure if thats 2 or 2.2.

Re: Cannot get SVN 1.5 HTTPS server working...

Hi Robert,
it's best to always do one step at a time :-)
First step: install Apache, make sure it works
Second step: Install Subversion in Apache, make sure it works!!!
THIRD step: configure Apache for SSL, make sure it works
FOURTH step: test subversion via SSL
As far as I can tell from your post, you're trying everything at once.
You can do that when you've done everything successfully a couple of
times and know where to look for problems.
From this post and your other question, it looks like you're not
experienced with SVN+Apache yet, so I'd recommend smaller steps.
Please let us know if the second step works, your problem does not look
related to SSL at all...
IF Subversion over HTTP (port 80) works and it's really a HTTPS-problem,
you might have to configure Subversion in your "HTTPS"-(virtual)-host.
Depending on your Apache configuration, the https-host-configuration can
be independent from the http-host.
A lot has changed in Apache 2.2 compared to Apache 2.0 - which version
are you using?
Cheers,
Holger
