[jira] Created: (FELIX-8) Implement Log Service

Implement Log Service
---------------------

         Key: FELIX-8
         URL: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FELIX-8
     Project: Felix
        Type: New Feature
  Components: Log Service
    Reporter: Richard S. Hall

See section 101 in the OSGi R4 Service Compendium for a full description of the task. Since implementations of this service exist, perhaps a donation would be possible.

Agree. "Log Service" should depict the 'provisioning contract', and not the
provider itself.

Excellent. This sounds like it could be a great contribution.

I anticipate that we will see multiple implementations for different
purposes and environments, so this makes sense to me. I expect that we
might be able to talk Rob Walker into contributing his simpler
implementation. If we end up with multiple implementations, we might
want to give them more colorful names that "Log Service" so in JIRA we
can differentiate the components.

I am interested in enhancing my LogService to full R4 compliance (if anything
beyond the R3). It uses Log4J as the backend. Additional features done,
in-progress or planned;

  * Default Log4J setup per bundle, which gets something 'reasonable' per
bundle. The LogService bundle implements ManagedService, to receive
     full application log configuration.

  * Exporting of a sopmewhat modified Jakarta Commons Logging API, which
should allow 3rd party libraries that uses the JCL to get linked into
     the OSGi logging framework.

  * Possibly a modified Log4J Logger class, to intercept requests from
Log4J specific 3rd party libraries, to get linked into the OSGi
     logging framework.

Please note that this is not a "minimalistic approach", and we should perhaps
have some simpler one as well.
