errors in module.t & others when installing mod_perl

Now I'm trying to install mod_perl 2.0.2 on a different machine running
Apache/2.0.49. When I run "make test", this is the chart of errors that I
get at the end:

Failed Test Stat Wstat Total Fail Failed List of Failed
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
t/api/module.t 317 11 3.47% 15 20 25 30 35
40
                                                            45 50 55 60 65
t/hooks/hookrun.t 255 65280 10 18 180.00% 2-10
t/hooks/stacked_handlers2.t 255 65280 1 2 200.00% 1
t/user/rewrite.t 255 65280 ?? ?? % ??

(Incidentally, I ran "make test" a second time to see if the results were a
fluke, and I got th exact same results. And it can't be a coincidence that
the 11 tests that filed in the first suite were all evenly divisible by 5;
don't know if that points to a likely cause?)

Any ideas on what I can do to get it to install?

Following the instructions at
http://perl.apache.org/docs/2.0/user/help/help.html#_C_make_test___Failures
I also ran:
make test TEST_VERBOSE=1 TEST_FILES="t/api/module.t t/hooks/hookrun.t
t/hooks/stacked_handlers2.t t/user/rewrite.t"

and I am pasting the results of the resulting t/logs/error_log file
(everything between the ">>>>>" lines):

I'm magic! ;) Actually it's in the test report you posted earlier,
I just missed it the first time around.

Yeah those are not the right instructions to be following if you're
attempting to install the way you are. I.e. on a RH/Fedora system
  using the rpm installed Apache.

> Do I have to do something else if I want to "remove the mod_perl rpm"?

Just run 'rpm -e mod_perl' on your system.

Yes, RH uses an "odd" layout compared to most Apache installs.
But if you read the paragraph before it says:

For example RedHat Linux system installs the httpd binary, the apxs
and apr-config scripts (the latter two are needed to build mod_perl)
all in different locations, therefore they configure mod_perl 2.0 as:

  % perl Makefile.PL MP_APXS=/path/to/apxs \
    MP_APR_CONFIG=/another/path/to/apr-config <other options>

Which should have been the big tip off, but I can see how you got
 off track.

Without getting into a bunch of details the main reason is well,
with Windows you have I dunno say 8 different platforms to support
  ( 98, ME, 2000 Home, 2000 Pro, XP, XP SP1, XP SP2, XP SP3, etc ).

mod_perl runs on many different operating systems, including Linux.
And with Linux alone there are literally thousands of different
distributions. Granted, 99% of them are going to install the
same, but finding all of the various permutations of scenarios is
non-trivial. This doesn't even get into Free/Net/OpenBSD, Solaris,
  AIX, HP-UX, etc, etc, etc.

I understand your frustration, but when in doubt the "correct"
instructions on are perl.apache.org or the ones you find here on
the mailing list. For the most part anyway, despite the rumors
to the contrary, mod_perl is built by humans which sometimes make
  mistakes. ;)

Considering RH/Fedora is so popular, I'll work up a special
instruction document just for them so Google searches will find it
and see about getting it added onto the site.

Yep, turns out that's displayed in the SERVER_SOFTWARE environment variable
by CGI scripts on the server. How did you know that? :)

Nope. I was following the steps at:
http://perl.apache.org/docs/2.0/rename.html#Effects
which said that the only thing I had to do was run this command:
find /usr/lib/perl5 -name 'Apache2*' -exec rm -rf {} \;

Do I have to do something else if I want to "remove the mod_perl rpm"?

Oh OK, I was going by the instructions at
http://gozer.ectoplasm.org/Talks/mod_perl-2.0-from-cgi-fast.pdf
since they were the only set of instructions I could find on the entire
Internet that specified what to type (thank God that Google indexes PDF
files :) ) And
http://perl.apache.org/docs/2.0/user/install/install.html
says "a correctly built Apache shouldn't require the MP_APR_CONFIG option,
since MP_APXS should provide the location of this script." I thought the
version of Apache on my machine was "correctly built" since it was, after
all, running, but maybe that means something other than what I think it
means. Does "correctly built" actually mean "you built it on your system
the old fashioned way, with your own compiler"?

The problem with even the smallest ambiguities in the instructions is that
as the number of ambiguities increases, the likelihood that you misread at
least one of them, goes up exponentially!

I suppose lots of people must ask, "Why can't the installer be a single
program that I just run, like on Windows", but why can't it be? A lot of
these tests and checks that I keep doing manually (and which lead to the
wrong results if the instructions are ambiguous) seem like things that
could be easily automated, couldn't they? If for no other reason than to
make worthwhile all the work that the developers spent on mod_perl -- after
all that, how many people give up even trying to get it installed? I have
spent three weeks trying to get this working, and every time I run into an
error, I seek out help and find out the instructions from the Web that I
was working off of, were incomplete, or wrong, and there's always one more
thing I have to do first. An installer program can do all of this
automatically.

I'm extremely reluctant to get rid of Plesk since I would forfeit any
chance of ever getting help from my ISP again if I needed something else.

Here's what I don't understand:

1) Are you saying that I get all these "core dump" messages when I run
"perl Makefile.PL MP_APXS=/usr/sbin/apxs
MP_APR_CONFIG=/usr/bin/apr-config", because the mod_perl RPM is already
installed? But in that case, why didn't I get all those error messages
when I ran "perl Makefile.PL MP_APXS=/usr/sbin/apxs
MP_APR_CONFIG=/usr/bin/apr-config" the first time?

2) If I can't *remove* the mod_perl rpm because the Plesk rpm is dependent
on it, is it not possible to just *upgrade* the mod_perl rpm, so that it's
never "missing" and doesn't break any dependencies?

Well you're trying to run this in an environment with Plesk, that
is going to cause you untold amount of headaches. Control panels
like Plesk, cPanel, etc. aren't built to support more advanced
  setups.

  Here are some suggestions:

  1) If you aren't using Plesk then uninstall it with:

     rpm -e psa
     rpm -e mod_perl

  2) If you are wanting to use it for some sites, but not your mod_perl
ones you can install Apache into another location from source
     and compile mod_perl against that.

OK I found the .packlist file at
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.3/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/mod_perl/.packlist

so, I ran the command:
cat
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.3/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/mod_perl/.packlist
| xargs rm -vf

and then went back to my mod_perl-2.0.2 directory and did:
perl Makefile.PL MP_APXS=/usr/sbin/apxs MP_APR_CONFIG=/usr/bin/apr-config

and I still got the long string of "server dumped core again" messages.

I also tried doing:
rpm -e mod_perl
and I got:
error: Failed dependencies:
mod_perl is needed by (installed) psa-7.5.0-fc2.build75041208.20

I am completely stuck again, sorry!

There's also files named "mod_perl.pm", and "ModPerl*", installed by
mod_perl2. Look for a file called ".packlist" in a "mod_perl" or "mod_perl2"
directory (or both if you've installed both); that should contain a list of
every file that "make install" installed. Then you can just do something
like:

cat /opt/apache2/perl5lib/i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi/auto/mod_perl2/.packlist | xargs rm -vf

	To remove those files.

I didn't notice this before, but it looks like you're installing
on a RH/Fedora system. Have you removed the mod_perl rpm?

I've never tried building mod_perl 2.0.2 against the installed
httpd RPM, but according to the install docs you need to use this
  instead of just MP_APXS=:

  % perl Makefile.PL MP_APXS=/path/to/apxs \
    MP_APR_CONFIG=/another/path/to/apr-config

With MP_APR_CONFIG pointing to wherever apr-config is located on
  your system.

Actually I thought that was the very first thing I had done before starting
to install mod_perl 2.0.2 on this machine. If you don't uninstall the
older version of mod_perl first, you get a more or less clear error message
telling you that the problem is that the older version is still present,
and you need to get rid of it before proceeding.

But, just to make sure, I tried doing it again -- ran the command
find /usr/lib/perl5 -name 'Apache2*' -exec rm -rf {} \;
to clean out those files, and then did
perl Makefile.PL MP_APXS=/usr/sbin/apxs

and at the end of all the output I got a bunch of "server dumped core"
messages at the end. This didn't happen the last time I did "perl
Makefile.PL MP_APXS=/usr/sbin/apxs". Any idea what happened and how to fix
it?

It looks like you haven't removed an old mod_perl 1.99 installation
on this system. You'll need to do that before trying to install
2.0.2. You can find the instructions here:
