j2:portal.genapp.minimal feedback
Up until now I have been using jetspeed straight from source. But I
want to customize some things so I've started using the plugin. I also
don't want all the demo pages so I chose to use the minimalist
approach.
I have two comments about the j2:portal.genapp.minimal goal. All the
webapp files are generated in target. This would seem like a good idea
if they could be restored after running maven clean. I am assuming
that I can create anything in src/webapp and it will be integrated
into my war.
Also AFAIK the minimal goal does not give the portal a default page.
One may not know that default-page.psml and my-account.psml are needed
to access the Administrative portlets.

OK, Thanks for offering to help.
I discovered that the system folder is useful for selecting portets in
page edit mode. If I hadn't have found that myself I would have asked
you. :)

Well, yes, by default it is.
But it is also possible to define the target files location elsewhere:
http://portals.apache.org/jetspeed-2/getting-started-source.html#Optional_Portal_Configuration_Properties
Note though that the default locations (under target) are chosen so that
you can simply run maven war(:install) and get everything packed as you probably want.
If you change the location of the generated files, you'll have to handle
copying/merging those yourself to be able to produce a proper (portal) war file.

Yes.
But: maven has the nasty habit of *only* copying newer files.
So, if you happen to need to override default Jetspeed files (like customized assembly files)
you quickly will notice this becoming a problem.
So, I usually end up creating a custom "all" goal in a maven.xml which first copies all the
src/webapp files into the target folder before invoking the "war" goal:
<goal name="merge-portal-src">
<echo message="Copy Portal Sources to Build"/>
<!-- we need to copy over the custom portal resources ourselves
because the maven war goal has overwrite="false" meaning
that newer Jetspeed resources take precedence which we don't want -->
<copy todir="${maven.build.dir}/${context.name}/" overwrite="true">
<fileset dir="./src/webapp">
</fileset>
</copy>
</goal>
<goal name="all">
...
<attainGoal name="j2:portal.genapp"/>
...
<attainGoal name="merge-portal-src"/>
<attainGoal name="war:install"/>
...
</goal>
This is just a snippet, but you get the idea.

Well, you can at least run these tasks from custom goals in maven.xml of
your own. And run other maven goals as well.
Or simply use some ant scripts :)
Anyway, good luck with your custom portal build.
If you need more help, just ask. I've already done plenty of those :)

All is well with the minimal goal. I've added some more comments.

I have to rerun the genapp goal to restore the target files. Perhaps
it is designed to be used this way.

I just put these files in the custom portal src/webapp/WEB-INF/pages
directory and the issue was resolved. If you don't put
default-page.psml a tomcat error shows saying "No page matched /
request in site view".
Overall the plugin and the custom portal are doing what I want. I just
need an easy way to redeploy. I use 'maven war:install', 'maven -o
j2:nodbQuickStart' because I don't know any better.
