Hi Graeme,

JDK 1.7 is already a requirement.  See the README.txt file:

4. Download the Java SE 7 JDK (Java Development Kit), or greater, from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/index.html.
   You will need the JDK installed, and the %JAVA_HOME%\bin directory included
   on your command path.  To test this, issue a "java -version" command from your
   shell and verify that the Java version is 1.7 or greater.

Binaries we ship all are built against 1.7, with the exception of the Solr and ElasticSearch plugins, which are built against 1.6 (since that is what their platforms require).

The source version is still marked as "1.6" however; maybe that is what is confusing you?
