Possible cause of Linux core dump?

I had a look at the 1.0.5 code.  It seems to me that there is a byte 
alignment problem.  I was getting a bus error on Solaris with the
combination of mod_php and Apache 1.0.5 and the following patch
clears it up:

If somebody can track down some of the Linux people who reported problems
and have them try this patch we might be able to put an end to that bit
of confusion.
