[GitHub] [beam] Abirdcfly opened a new pull request, #22618: fix minor unreachable code caused by log.Fatal
Abirdcfly opened a new pull request, #22618:
URL: https://github.com/apache/beam/pull/22618
https://pkg.go.dev/log#Fatalf
> Fatalf is equivalent to Printf() followed by a call to os.Exit(1).
see https://go.dev/play/p/iw2MCkHArJZ for example:
```go
package main
import "log"
func main() {
log.Println("Println will print and not exit")
log.Fatalf("Fatalf will print and exit")
log.Println("this line cant reach")
}
/* output:
2009/11/10 23:00:00 Println will print and not exit
2009/11/10 23:00:00 Fatalf will print and exit
Program exited.
*/
Instead of downgrading this, we should probably just move it behind `wg.Done()`. This does still represent a failure case
Similarly here, we probably should just remove the Printf statement since if it makes it to the user, this is a failure case.
Review Comment:
I'll note that the wait group state won't matter because log.Fatal will kill the binary anyway.
Sibling worker processes (as python uses) need everything to be torn down when one of them dies and exits out. This keeps cleaner parity with the other SDK languages, and matches execution model assumptions. (an SDK worker dying means there's a problem with the VM generally, and it's better for the runner to start the whole thing fresh).
