[Issue 125631] New: Randomly locks up

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=125631

          Issue ID: 125631
        Issue Type: DEFECT
           Summary: Randomly locks up
           Product: Calc
           Version: 4.1.1
          Hardware: All
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: ui
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: jimbosalley@gmail.com

Been struggling with this since before I installed the 4.1.1 update. I guess I
was overly optimistic that the upgrade would solve the problem. When an update
didn't do it, I installed 4.1.1 fresh, after an uninstall. No difference.

I can not seem to find a pattern that is consistant.

The duration between lock-ups is completely random, as far as I can tell.

Sometimes it locks up while I am entering (text or numeral) data into cells.

It has locked up when I have many cells highlighted, while I am getting ready
to make a format change, like changing the background, or adding borders. But
it does it, BEFORE I get the chance to click the format selection. OIt doesn't
seem to matter if I used the mouse, or keyboard to make the highlight.

It has never locked up on me when I have the format cells window open. Dumb
luck?

Sometimes it locks up during a save.

It has locked up during autosaves, A LOT.

It's rare to see it lock up the same way two times in a row, but autosave has
done it quite a few times.

Sometimes it locks up a few seconds, or minutes after an auto or manual save.

Sometimes it locks up after very little user interfacing, sometimes it locks up
after 5 minutes of intense manual data updating.

Sometimes it locks up when I change tabs, sometimes while I am on the same tab.

Sometimes it locks up within minutes of restarting Calc, sometimes it is DAYS.
( I rarely restart my computer, but even then, some of the locks have happened
within minutes of a hard boot. )

I have no need to export to another spreadsheet software, so I only save using
the default settings, in a folder designated for my business documents on my
C:/ drive.

It happens with the spreadsheet I have with 20 tabs, and it has happened with
spreadsheets with only one tab. None of the 20 pages have an extreme amount of
data or formattng. I simply use different tabs to sort product types. A
typical page does not even require side-scrolling to see everything, and
scrolling down more than a page is unusual. I typically use an 8-font, and 90%
view size.

I have tried closing all other open programs, after a fresh hard boot, and then
opening Calc - made no difference.

I don't do anything fancy. I'm just using the spreadsheet to keep track of
inventory, which data I manually update, and to help me calculate prices on
items I an looking at purchasing. (You know, if I want to sell it for this
price, and I have these fixed overheads, how much am I willing to pay for it,
and still turn a profit?)

I do have a few formulas that get data from other tabs withing the same
spreadsheet, but I can not see a connection betweening editing the source data,
and these lock ups.

I'm using Windows8 version 6.3 build 9600 on an HP with a core i3 processor.

I'm not very good with searches. I seem to lack the knack for selecting the
right terms to search for. If I have screwed up, and posted it in the wrong
place, or if there is already a post on this issue, please be kind, and point
me to the right area. Please also accept my apologies for my error.

I'm hoping someone has a solution, and that it's something I have set
incorrectly on my system. I could use help with this.

Your patience is most appreciated.

[Issue 125631] Randomly locks up

Hi all, I thought I would ask if I have made a mistake in posting this here?
Since I have not seen a single response, I figured I must have done something
wrong?

This is starting to drive me crazy. If I could afford to buy Microshaft
Office, I would surrender, and do it. Alas, were it not a gift, I wouldn't be
able to afford this computer, much less less add over-priced bloat-ware to it.

If there is any more information I can share, or if I have posted this
incorrectly, or in the wrong place, PLEASE let me know. It is very frustrating
to have to do me work over again, several times a day, or even in a single
hour. Auto-save doesn't seem to work, when this bug attacks, and try as I
might, I just don't remember to click the save button every two minutes.

Please help.

Alternately, if someone knows another freeware that will replace Open Office,
or even just Calc, that would be very cool of you to share.

I'm sorry that I don't have the skills to contribute to solving the problem,
myself. Believe me, if I had any programming skill, I would be elbow-deep in
this issue.

Thanks to all who post a message, any message - at this point, I am not even
sure that anyone is even seeing this post.

Please note that this is a bug system tracker but not a helpdesk. You should
report it our support forums as it seems - at least for me - that your problem
is better suited there:
