Latin1 in logfile

When I used ap_log_error with latin1 or unicode the output look like:

Le fichier ne configuration n'est pas initialis\xe9.

The acute e is replace by xe9.

Is there a way to fix that?

ap_log_error is not part of apr.  It's part of httpd - seek help there.
