[DISCUSS] Steps to making the first Apache release

Hello all,

Starting this thread to discuss the prep work needed to make code suitable
and easy for our first Apache release.

First good step would be to rename the packages to org.apache.hudi?

Here's a list of items that may need to happen before that.

- Cut a final release on com.uber.hoodie
- Merge all big pending PRs
- Upstream redo partition capping feature
- Rename packages to org.apache.hudi

what do you all think? anything I missed ?

Thanks
Vinoth

 Yes, I would like to be the release manager for the first release.

It usually works best if the candidate volunteers and lazy consensus is
sufficient.

I have read thru (I hope sufficiently enough) docs and put up some initial
steps as subtasks here.
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HUDI-121
Folks, feel free to volunteer for these tasks

I would like to propose that we start with the hardest task first -
HUDI-124 (3rd party lib and legal clearance)
@mentors, what do you think?

Also, we need to pick a release manager as a community. Would that be a
VOTE or DISCUSS thread with +1 votes on nominees?

Thanks
Vinoth

later and set the ball rolling next week now that the formalities are all
done

Re: [DISCUSS] Steps to making the first Apache release

Posted by Thomas Weise <th...@apache.org>.
Hi,

Renaming packages is a step that I would recommend to occur before the
first ASF release.

There is a lot more work:

* license headers in all files
* check dependencies: https://www.apache.org/legal/resolved.html
* ensure no binaries are in source releases
* etc etc

You could also discuss what tools you want to use that can help to support
some of the policies (license header checker, dependency license checker
etc.)

What's the status of CI currently?

It will take a while before everything comes together, so good to start
soon.

Thanks,
Thomas
