Xerces 1.1.1 and endElement

I have just started a new project using the SAX2 interface. I am using the
1.1.1 version of SDK downloaded from xml.apache.org. I am running into a
couple of problems and would appreciate anyone giving any ideas on these:

- The endElement() method in the class derived from
org.xml.sax.helpers.DefaultHandler does not get called. The startElement()
method does get called.

- We specify "encoding" property in the first line of XML documents as
follows:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?>

When the "encoding" property is specified like this, the ::characters()
method in the above class does not do anything. If this property is omitted,
then the ::characters() method does get called!

Sahib Aulakh.
