I don't know if it is directly related to this patch, but I have tried this patch, and although queries don't break, some components results like facets, highlight, and custom components don't always appear in the response (most of the time not). In previous versions, 4.x, facets, etc were always returned, regardless if timeAllowed kicked in. 

For our use case, this is a major bug and a show-stopper. We are upgrading to solr 5, but due to this issue, we might hold and wait until this has been solved.
