Bizarre rendering of Arabic (Batik 1.5b4b, Java 1.4.0
Hello batik-users,
I am confused by the rendering of Arabic scripts in batik. On the
one hand, Arabic language text is rendered incorrectly (all isolate
glyphs used). On the other hand, Urdu (which also uses the Arabic
script) is rendered with contextual forms, ('joined up'
appearance) (but rendered left-to-right, unfortunately).
I attach a test file that demonstrates this, plus a rendering from
Batik and a rendering from notepad ;-)
Why is contextual shaping ocurring in one case but not in the other?
If someone can produce a rendering of this in batik 1.5b4b running
on Java 1.3.x I would appreciate it.

Chris,
I'll discuss this with the Java 2D team.
Vincent.

Regarding the Batik language code issues
Posted by Vincent Hardy <vi...@sun.com>.
Chris,
Hello Chris,
Thanks for the multiple error reports. I have concatenated your reports
into a single bug under Bugzilla:
http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=13870
Note that you can enter bugs in Bugzilla yourself which has the
advantage that you'll get notified when the issue is resolved (or if the
status of the report changes).
Regards,
Vincent.

Yes, but I had not noticed it ... sorry. Yes, your rendering looks
correct. Its Right to left, has contextual forms, and has the
mandatory ligatures such as lam-aleef.

The notepad one was rendered in Tahoma, which is a sans-serif. Yours
is a serif font, so closer to a traditional calligraphic style..
So, whats up (or changed) in Java 1.4? Clearly Batik should be tested
against the testsuite with 1.3, anyway.

Yes, didn't you get my attached PNG?
My Batik rendering looks the same (to my untrained eye) as the
Note Pad rendering, except it looked better :) (the font is nicer I think).

I got a bounce from that, did people get the attachments?

OK so, its a Java 1.4 thing. Are you getting rtl text as well?

Aha.

It happens in both cases for me
