Are you sure of the version of Xalan you're using?  I tried your stylesheet 
with Xalan-J 2.5.2 and the latest code from CVS, using both Xalan-J 
Interpretive and XSLTC, but didn't see the error you reported.  I did see a 
similar error with a version of Xalan-J that was packaged in an older Sun JDK 
1.4.x.  See the FAQ list [1] to determine whether that is the source of the 
problem.
