Ramp up

Hello,

I use JMeter to test the response times of my application. I´m using 500 threads to represent 500 users, with ramp up of 250 secs. My test plan have a timer to simulate the think time (3-5 sec). I want to know how do you use the ramp up period to represent a real circunstance.
