[Grant] Ant problems
Hey all,
A couple of days ago, the Ant classloader was changed
significantly, including calling out to a second
ClassLoader class, and the Grant AntClassLoader was
preventing the new Ant classes from functioning
correctly (at least inside the Jelly build). I moved
the most recent Ant classloader into Grant for now;
what should I have done?

It does - AFAIK.
The code is in ant/proposals/embed - right now embed works _only_ for
ant1.5 ( since 1.6 already has the same or better code ).
It is a ProjectHelper plugin - if you build embed and place it in
ant1.5 CLASSPATH it'll enable support for "dynamic properties", import
and few other features.
The interfaces are not frozen - I'm sure Stefan and other people will review
it and some improvments will happen.
Support for JXPath and Velocity dynamic properties is in proposals/embed -
you can use it as example.

CVS HEAD should give you that ability, see
src/main/org/apache/tools/ant/PropertyHelper.java.
Costin has been trying to design his work in a way that will allow you
to use a different ProjectHelper to do this for 1.5 as well, but I'm
not sure whether it will actually work that way.

Yes, indeed. Previously, it was our only solution in maven, and grant
definitely hs some wacky usage requirements regarding classpath ordering
and classloader hierarchy structure.
If ant has remedied this, then by all means, removing AntClassLoader
would be very wise. I haven't tracked ant very closely lately, but
if/when it allows us to manage ant properties external to the
o.a.t.ant.Project backed by some external structure, then grant itself
will become useless.
I should browse ant sources and reconsider alternative solutions to
our problems.

Sounds like Ant 1.5.2 could be a reasonable dependency
for Maven, and then our problems are solved. I'm
hoping that Grant can remove this class, regardless of
whether or not I've diagnosed this particular problem
correctly; duplicating classes is risky and leads to
cranky classloading.

This method will be part of Ant 1.5.2 - which will hopefully get
released in a few weeks.

Maven specifically uses:
<dependency>
<id>ant</id>
<version>1.5.1</version>
If that helps at all?

Re: [Grant] Ant problems

That's a tough one. The previous version no longer
works against the HEAD of Ant, so GUMP breaks.
However the version I just checked in won't work with
Ant 1.5, which is the version that Maven uses.

The AntClassLoader in grant may no longer be needed.
grant was explicitly written to solve some maven/jelly issues,
so it should probably track the versions of ant used by those
two projects.

You could use a snapshot of the CVS branch tagged ANT_15_BRANCH, this
one is supposed to include only bugfixes over 1.5.1 and will become
1.5.2 in a few weeks.

No idea, I'm just trying to get the GUMP build for
Jelly working.

What's the anticipated release of ant that'll include this?
What's the timeframe?
I don't think maven really wants to play with ant snapshots. We're
simply not that daring.

Re: [Grant] Ant problems
Posted by Morgan Delagrange <md...@yahoo.com>.
So this method that Ant switched on doesn't work?
public void addJavaLibraries() {
Vector packages =
JavaEnvUtils.getJrePackages();
Enumeration e = packages.elements();
while (e.hasMoreElements()) {
String packageName = (String)
e.nextElement();
addSystemPackageRoot(packageName);
}
}
Or is the Grant classloader only intended for use with
Ant 1.5? If so, I guess I should take it out of the
GUMP build.

Ensure that the same packages are delegated to the
parent classloader. grant's version just adds to the
list. There was noises about redoing it so that it was
configurable via a properties file or something instead
of relying on us to hand-edit and rebuild the jar to
change packages.
Anyhow, there's a pacakge-prefix list somewhere in
the loader. Allows the loader, even in isolationist
mode, to delegate various packages like "java.*" and
"org.xml.*" to a parent loader, attempting to avoid
nefarious multiple-loads issues.
