Release Notes doesn't mention about new feature of AOO Impress for Linux (video playing via gst-plugins)

Hi to all!

I looked over the "AOO 3.4 Release Notes"
and don't found any mention about implementation of one very remarcable
feature OpenOffice Impress in Linux systems.

Early videoplaying in presentation was available only though
1. Java Media Frameworks (JMF) - but it had very poor number of supported
formats.
2. or via external shell scripts
(http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/How_Tos/Using_Movies_in_Impress_on_Linux_Without_Java)
which run external video player with specified options.

In the Oracle OpenOffice 3.4 beta (and I check that it works with current
Apache OpenOffice 3.4 build) it is now avalable to play video in Impress
presentation via using appropriate gst-plugins.

Please, add information about this new feature to "Release Notes"
("New Features from OpenOffice 3.4 beta" section).

It will be a good news for many users as it is not supported in OpenOffice 3.3.0
and in more early versions.

Thanks for corrections,

but maybe it's better to place it under "New Features from OpenOffice 3.4 beta"
section as it was it's feature implemented already.
Currently it is placed in "New Features for Apache OpenOffice 3.4" section.

It works for me in binary "AOO340m1(Build:9588) - Rev. 1299571
2012-03-12 09.59.35 (Mon, 12 Mar 2012)"

May be it's need to install additional gst-plugins?
What is console output of ./simpress after you press "play" button at bottom
panel (this pannel is visible when inserted video is selected).
Are you hear any sounds?

I have the next gst-plugins installed in my gentoo linux system (but I need to
install additionaly "ffmpeg lame theora wavpack" to play .avi in inspite of
installed gst-plugins-xvid and gst-plugins-x264 previously as many others):

media-libs/gst-plugins-bad
media-libs/gst-plugins-base
media-libs/gst-plugins-good
media-libs/gst-plugins-ugly
media-plugins/gst-plugins-a52dec
media-plugins/gst-plugins-alsa

media-plugins/gst-plugins-dvdread

media-plugins/gst-plugins-wavpack
media-plugins/gst-plugins-x
media-plugins/gst-plugins-x264
media-plugins/gst-plugins-xvid
media-plugins/gst-plugins-xvideo

----------

I just run ./simpress , create new presentation, go to menu "Insert" - "Movie
and Sound", choose *.avi file (and even *.mp3, *.mp4 or even *.flv from youtube
such as "Sintel" movie - by choosing to show all files) and press "play" button
at bottom panel of Impress that appeared then just inserted video is
selected,
or just press F5 key (menu "View" - "Start Slideshow") to see presentation.

After pressing "play" of F5 video start to playback.

I build the Dev. Snaps. with Gstreamer enabled, and it works at least on
the distros I tested.

Please run AOO from the console, and see the output when you try toplay
a sound or a video.

Could someone verify this?

If that is true, could the bugzilla maintainer reopen bug#68717?

I don't remember exactly where I read about it for some years ago, but this
news was also described in linuxjournal.com in July 2010

As article refered that it is common feature for multimedia and it seems that
Sun's JMF was not upgrade since 2003 year.

So, I'll try, sorry for my grammar. It could be described for Release Notes
as:

------------------------------------------------

New Features from OpenOffice 3.4 beta
Linux improvement: New multimedia framework

- Gstreamer is available now to use instead/besides of Sun's Java Media
Framework (JMF) to playback multimedia content in AOO documents (e.g. audio
and video in Impress presentations).
Note that Gstreamer (with the appropriate gst-plugins) need be installed in
system.

------------------------------------------------

But I'm alerted by some text of linuxjournal.com article:

"Distribution developers can disable this support by choice if desired and
cause OpenOffice.org to revert to using Java."

So I don't know is there a possibility to use Sun's JMF now at all but due to
it's bad support for widespread multimedia formats it seems useless now for
most users. So it could be also described as (but maybe AOO is stiil support
JMF).

Maybe it is worth to remove any mentions about JMF from description at all:

------------------------------------------------

- Gstreamer is available now to use to playback multimedia content in AOO
documents (e.g. audio and video in Impress presentations).
Note that Gstreamer (with the appropriate gst-plugins) need to be installed in
system.

------------------------------------------------
