[jira] Created: (HBASE-522) Where new Text(string) might be used in client side method calls, add an overload that takes strings

Where new Text(string) might be used in client side method calls, add an overload that takes strings
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                 Key: HBASE-522
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-522
             Project: Hadoop HBase
          Issue Type: New Feature
          Components: client
            Reporter: Bryan Duxbury
            Priority: Trivial

There are a lot of places in our client side API where people probably don't care that Text is used in the underlying wire protocol. For instance, new HTable(HBaseConfig, Text) adds a little bit of extra hassle and code.

Where it makes sense, we should make an overload for constructors and client methods that can take a String and just convert it into a Text behind the scenes. This would beautify some of our code.

[jira] Resolved: (HBASE-522) Where new Text(string) might be used in client side method calls, add an overload that takes strings

Jim Kellerman resolved HBASE-522.
---------------------------------

    Resolution: Won't Fix

Since HBASE-82 will be changing row keys to byte[] overloading doesn't make sense.

stack updated HBASE-522:
------------------------

    Fix Version/s: 0.2.0

Marking this as a 0.2.0 because its easy and API is changing a load in 0.2.0 so lets get it all in in the one go.

Bryan Duxbury reopened HBASE-522:
---------------------------------

Jim, this isn't about keys. This is about uses in things like the HTable constructor, where byte[] will NOT replace Text.

Jim Kellerman commented on HBASE-522:
-------------------------------------

Ah, my misunderstanding. I thought it was about overloading methods that take row keys.
