form authentication with mysql

This is probably a complete newbie question:

I've been playing with the j_security_check security example to access a
mysql database. This works great as long as the password is stored in the
database as plaintext. Is there an easy way to use j_password to access
passwords that have been encrypted using mysql's password() command?

jakarta-tomcat-3.2.3
mm.mysql-2.0.7
MySQL-3.23.43-1

Thanks

Cindy
