So I was interested in seeing how much of a change this really was, so I made a pass at it here:

"ant test" passes, and long tests fail the same way with and without my patch, so it wasn't me :)

"ant test" passes, I'm getting some long test timeout failures, trying to figure out if I screwed something up, or if they are just random failures.
