   @lifepuzzlefun thanks for working on this. Given the size of the change, reviewers asked for a PIP first, and the PIP-232 proposal (#18985) didn't move forward, so the PR was left unfinished. The code it touches has also changed a lot since. We're going through the backlog of open PRs (https://lists.apache.org/thread/cgy7w0qgnq8s7j0ykyzgrn3hj4nb67wf), so I'm closing this one. If you'd like to continue, the way forward would be to restart the PIP discussion on dev@ and then open a fresh PR on current master.
