Was able to answer my own questions:
- Druid doesn't actually create the datasource until there is data loaded into it
- No data is getting loaded into my datasource because Druid is getting parse exceptions from the Avro messages (discovering the [Ingestion Reports](http://druid.io/docs/latest/ingestion/reports.html) was a huge help)
