preserving angle brackets in returning String value

Hello,
I'm returning String from axis service, but this String value has angle
brackets

e.g)

        StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer( "<Response>" );
        sb.append( "<ReturnCode>" );
        sb.append( returnCode );
        sb.append( "</ReturnCode>" );
        sb.append( "<Description>" );
        sb.append( message );
        sb.append( "</Description>" );
        sb.append( "</Response>" );

        return sb.toString();

However, on a client side, this String comes back with > and <...
anyway to preserve angle brackets?

Thanks

e.g)
