after the release of 4.1.9 is now done, I would like to take the chance
for asking if there are any suggestions.

Thanks

OK, I'll try this as next task.

For the beginning I've added a link to this webpage. Changing it to move
it to the Wiki would be a next task.

Back to the topic:
Do we have now any suggetions for hints that a macOS user could be
intested in?

Thanks

I've found this webpage (which was last updated on Nov 2018):

https://www.openoffice.org/download/common/instructions.html

So, in general we have already the instructions. However, they could
need an update. ;-)

me, too. ;-(
Maybe Dave has an idea how to get this done.

Neverthelesss I'll try to change to the popup window tomorrow as it is
definitely better than what we have now. More changes could be done later.

As you can see in the popup windows the text is different between the
platforms and they can change over the time.

When showing this in a (not that) little box depending on what is
clicked or where the mouse is, I think it can be disturbing.
IMHO the focus on downloading the files is than left to some other stuff.

Maybe the popup window can change to a full window that is opened in a
new tab?

Yes, the install instructions could be a separate webpage or indeed
somewhere is the Wiki where it can be linked to.

I like better the fact that now it is a ``real'' link. The button
shape suggests that it's clickable, and something actually happens
when I click it.

But I find the popup a bit ``bulky''. I do not know enough of current
web design, unfortunately, but maybe a new browser window with address
bar and all the Apache header and footer is ``too much''. I would like
best to see the text appear below, like the light green frame with
installation instructions that pops out when an OS is selected.

Having Linux repositories for the major distributions should be one of
our next goals IMHO. But this is off-topic here.

what about the following draft:

"
Apache OpenOffice is running on Intel-based Mac hardware.

But with the help of Apple's Rosetta technology it is running also on
Apple-designed processors that are based on ARM technology.

Examples: MacBook Air (4th gen, since end of 2020), Mac mini (5th gen
since end of 2020) and MacBook Pro (2020, with 13" display and 2
Thunderbolt ports).

For more information about Rosetta see Apple's support website.

I hesitate to put it beside the other text. As it is a lot more, it's
more complex to get it localized.

But I would favor a link that points to a centralized webpage. Like it
is done with the "Java and Apache OpenOffice" link.

> Thanks for the update that points to https://openoffice-org.staged.apache.org/download/platform_hints.html now I do no longer have to think about deb vs rpm.

Please note that this is just our staging area for testing. Of course
when all is done it will be published to the public webpage.

Re: [DISCUSS] Platform hint text for macOS

Posted by "Dean.Webber" <20...@student.sit.ac.nz>.
Much better.

Any chance to add install instructions for the Linux, not been around enough distros to know the difference between the various installs. Seems to be a barrier for some people to use AOO instead of the default office suite.

The method I use on a new install is;
sudo apt-get remove --purge libreoffice*
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove
cd en-GB/DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
cd desktop-integration
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Something like that, actually think I do;
cd en-GB/DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
sudo dpkg -i desktop-integration/*.deb

Would be helpful, since OpenOffice (does not seem to be or) is not the Software Center (on Linux Mint)

Thanks for the update that points to https://openoffice-org.staged.apache.org/download/platform_hints.html now I do no longer have to think about deb vs rpm.

I've changed the visualization of the platform hints:

https://apc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fopenoffice-org.staged.apache.org%2Fdownload%2Findex.html&data=04%7C01%7C2018001901%40student.sit.ac.nz%7Cf855544745ed4cf9283b08d8f76896d8%7Cc46ab213d1794a719ff7b9d9fe3f3b48%7C0%7C0%7C637531375906771683%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=7vUcLlfNZkJqPRd2QG5VXN2w%2BXyiwDC0bpW7WvK8es4%3D&reserved=0

Please have a look and tell me if this is better than the previous
"tooltip over the colored button" solution.

PS:
The text for macOS is still missing. Maybe time to define it?

Thanks

really no suggestions? I remeber that we had some discussions about what
to tell the users in past threads.

OK, then I suggest to first agree on a text and then decide on how to
display it to the users.

I agree with "Maybe we need something more obvious than a tool tip."

Have been clicking on 'Important hint: RPM vs. DEB = What to choose?' for some time, without any result. It is usually not obvious to hover on something for a tool tip, and probably should not be used to contain important information.

Maybe someone who monitors the forum can answer best?

I have the impression that users are hesitating to download/install AOO
on macOS (esp. Big Sur) because they don't know if it will work. Of
course, you and me would just try out, but we are no "ordinary" users.

So, what is important for these users?

User often ask if our DMG will also install/run on M1 chips (supported
since Big Sur).
We never clarified this officially and I don't want to tell every single
one that it works... ;-)

This is just for a better user experience and to have less questions
about that.
(Of course we all know that users often don't read these notes, but then
we have done our best, at least!)
