Re: How do you set page orientation, I need to set page for
landscape.
In the absence of any specification whatsoever, "pagewidth" and "pageheight"
default to 8in and 11in. If you wish to have other dimensions you should
explicitly set these attributes on your "simple-page-master".
To keep things in perspective, remember that FOP is sufficiently low-level
that "portrait" and "landscape" don't mean much.
Arved Sandstrom
Note to developers: Our fall-back (default) of 11in for "page-height" is
fine, but the XSL spec suggests a fallback of 8.26in for "page-width".
Should we bother changing? It's only a suggested default, after all.

Hi, Stephen
Your supposition is correct. The justification in the XSL spec working draft
for these fallback figures is precisely what you surmise.
I'm not sure how a standard physical unprinted margin should (or could) be
addressed. As it stands right now, when we look at the page viewport
area/page reference area pair generated by a simple-page-master, for
example, "page-width" and "page-height" determine the height and width of
the content rectangle of the page _viewport_ area, and available margin
properties ("margin-top" and so forth) are used to indent the page
_reference_ area content rectangle from _that_. The margin property initial
values must be zero, but in any case they are not the margins that you refer
to.
Point being, that when I look at the spec I don't see any mechanism that
requires or permits the explicit allowance for such a beast. :-)

For the sake of sanity, the sooner FOP can switch to element and
attribute names of the March 2000 draft, the better it would be. It
would surely not be that hard to make the change now? for instance, Hani
uses fo:sequence-specification, which is no longer there.
Else, use a different namespace...

Stefano, Arved, and Linus.
May be I can save Linus some learning time
by giving him a complete Landscape Report.
Example Landscape FO file
http://ccap.courts.state.wi.us/FOtesting/FOFiles/joc_L.xml.fo
resulting PDF Landscape document
http://ccap.courts.state.wi.us/FOtesting/PDFFiles_CVS_latest/joc_L_CVS.xml.pdf
Example Portrait FO file
http://ccap.courts.state.wi.us/FOtesting/FOFiles/joc.xml.fo
resulting PDF Portrait document
http://ccap.courts.state.wi.us/FOtesting/PDFFiles_CVS_latest/joc_CVS.xml.pdf
Enjoy
Hani
PS: I am working on providing the FOP project with as
many test cases as possible.

Just to provide a little perspective, remember that the default size needs to
fit on a printable page worldwide. I suspect that a size of 8.26 by 11 inches
was chosen as the intersecion of USA A size (8.5 * 11) and rest-of-world A4
size (210 * 297 mm =~ 8.27 * 11.69 in). A document formatted at this size will
fit (albeit with no margin!) on anyone's printer output. If I am correct,
someone should think about whether a standard physical unprinted margin should
be built in, too.

I would say yes: _total_ commitment on spec is the goal. And report back
ASAP if something is wrong.
We plan to be _the_ reference implementation, right?
