customizing syn:keywords

I would like to customize syn:keyword properties.

For example, the output of $Date$ is very verbose:
$Date: 2005-10-01 15:34:27 -0700 (Sat, 01 Oct 2005) $

Is there a way to specify a format for this and other keyword
properties?
