[jira] Created: (FELIX-2151) Use URIs instead of URLs in the API
Use URIs instead of URLs in the API
-----------------------------------
Key: FELIX-2151
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FELIX-2151
Project: Felix
Issue Type: Improvement
Components: Bundle Repository (OBR)
Reporter: Guillaume Nodet
Assignee: Guillaume Nodet
Fix For: bundlerepository-1.6.0
The reason is that you can then more easily manipulate the URIs without the need
for having the URL handler. For example I'd like to use mvn url handlers for resources,
but manipulating the API outside of OSGi will make it very difficult or even parsing the
repository. When accessing the resources, URI can be converted to URLs quite easily,
checking the needed URL handlers presence as late as possible.

[jira] Commented: (FELIX-2151) Use URIs instead of URLs in the API

Felix Meschberger commented on FELIX-2151:
------------------------------------------
The drawback of the proposed solution is that the URI object has only been introduced with Java 1.4 and using this class might prevent using the code in limited environments like Java 1.3 or mobiles.
Without looking at the code: could we use strings instead ?

David Savage commented on FELIX-2151:
-------------------------------------
There's a good reason to avoid URL's if you ever expect to call equals on it (i.e. it ends up in a hashmap) URL's actually do a reverse dns lookup to confirm the ip address of the machine is the same - this is the cause of many nasty bugs. As such I'd always suggest URI over URL.
If you want backwards compatibility may need to use String?

Yes. If possible I'd like OBR to be usable on 1.3 (or at least foundation profile which is ~1.4).

Yeah, string would be fine too. Does anyone actually uses OBR on Java 1.3 ? I was wondering if we could upgrade to JDK 5 ;-)
