getting debug: cannot use bayes on this message; db not initialised yet

I get this message when running spamassassin --lint -D.

I've googled this, but can't seem to find a solution. My bayes files
are in /etc/mail/spamassassin. I've done a chown to defang.defang for
both the directory and the bayes files. I've done a chmod 755 on the
directory. In doing a search on google, those were the only two issues
that came up in reference to this message. What else could I be doing
wrong?

Ownership/permissions has nothing to do with it. Basically none of the
tokens in the message you passed in were in the Bayes DB. So it had
nothing to work with.

That warning message is a bit clearer in 3.0. :)
