[I] [Question][Module Name] Devlake ECS Deployment [incubator-devlake]
amokkapati opened a new issue, #7927:
URL: https://github.com/apache/incubator-devlake/issues/7927
Hi, I wanted to convert a docker-compose file by defining the individual containers as a registered task onto ECS so I can launch it as a service with the AWS Fargate launch tyoe. How do I define the volumes for ECS and how do I configure the containers with images?

<!-- Answer -->
Yes, using `3000:3000` is allowed and will work correctly with `networkMode=awsvpc`. This configuration ensures that the container's port 3000 is mapped to the host's port 3000, which is required when using `awsvpc` mode.

To configure Docker volumes for `MySQL-storage`, `grafana-storage`, and `devlake-log`, you can use the following `docker-compose.yml` configuration:
```yaml
version: "3"
services:
mysql:
image: mysql:8.0.26
volumes:
- mysql-storage:/var/lib/mysql
restart: always
ports:
- 127.0.0.1:3306:3306
environment:
MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD: admin
MYSQL_DATABASE: lake
MYSQL_USER: merico
MYSQL_PASSWORD: merico
grafana:
environment:
DEVLAKE_ENDPOINT: devlake:8080
GRAFANA_ENDPOINT: http://localhost:3002
depends_on:
- devlake
volumes:
mysql-storage:
grafana-storage:
```
In this configuration:
- `mysql-storage` is used for MySQL data storage.
- `grafana-storage` is used for Grafana data storage.
- `./logs` is used for DevLake logs.
To launch DevLake, follow these steps:
1. Download `docker-compose.yml` and `env.example` from the [latest release](https://github.com/apache/incubator-devlake/releases/tag/v0.16.1-beta1) into a folder.
2. Rename `env.example` to `.env`. For Mac/Linux users, run `mv env.example .env` in the terminal.
3. Run `docker-compose up -d` to launch DevLake.
Visit `http://localhost:4000` in your browser to configure DevLake and collect data. To view dashboards, visit `localhost:3002` (username: `admin`, password: `admin`) [[1]](https://github.com/apache/incubator-devlake/blob/main/devops/releases/lake-v0.13.0/docker-compose.yml)[[2]](https://github.com/apache/incubator-devlake-website/blob/main/versioned_docs/version-v0.15/GettingStarted/DockerComposeSetup.md)[[3]](https://github.com/apache/incubator-devlake-website/blob/main/versioned_docs/version-v0.16/GettingStarted/DockerComposeSetup.md)[[4]](https://github.com/apache/incubator-devlake/blob/main/devops/releases/lake-v0.15.0/docker-compose.yml)[[5]](https://github.com/apache/incubator-devlake/blob/main/devops/releases/lake-v0.11.0/docker-compose.yml).

To convert the provided `docker-compose` file to an ECS task definition, you need to define the containers and volumes accordingly. Below are the container and volume definitions for the ECS task definition:
### Container Definitions
```json
[
{
"name": "grafana",
"image": "devlake.docker.scarf.sh/apache/devlake-dashboard:v1.0.0",
"portMappings": [
{
"containerPort": 3000,
"hostPort": 3002
}
],
"mountPoints": [
{
"sourceVolume": "grafana-storage",
"containerPath": "/var/lib/grafana"
}
],
"environment": [
{ "name": "GF_SERVER_ROOT_URL", "value": "http://localhost:4000/grafana" },
{ "name": "GF_USERS_DEFAULT_THEME", "value": "light" },
{ "name": "MYSQL_URL", "value": "url" },
{ "name": "MYSQL_DATABASE", "value": "url" },
{ "name": "MYSQL_USER", "value": "user" },
{ "name": "MYSQL_PASSWORD", "value": "password" },
{ "name": "TZ", "value": "UTC" }
],
"essential": true
},
{
"name": "devlake",
"image": "devlake.docker.scarf.sh/apache/devlake:v1.0.0",
"portMappings": [
{
"containerPort": 8080,
"hostPort": 8080
}
],
"mountPoints": [
{
"sourceVolume": "devlake-log",
"containerPath": "/app/logs"
}
],
"environment": [
{ "name": "LOGGING_DIR", "value": "/app/logs" },
{ "name": "TZ", "value": "UTC" }
],
"essential": true
},
{
"name": "config-ui",
"image": "devlake.docker.scarf.sh/apache/devlake-config-ui:v1.0.0",
"portMappings": [
{
"containerPort": 4000,
"hostPort": 4000
}
],
"environment": [
{ "name": "DEVLAKE_ENDPOINT", "value": "devlake:8080" },
{ "name": "GRAFANA_ENDPOINT", "value": "grafana:3000" },
{ "name": "TZ", "value": "UTC" }
],
"essential": true,
"dependsOn": [
{
"containerName": "devlake",
"condition": "START"
}
]
}
]
```
### Volume Definitions
```json
[
{
"name": "grafana-storage",
"host": {
"sourcePath": "/var/lib/grafana"
}
},
{
"name": "devlake-log",
"host": {
"sourcePath": "/app/logs"
}
}
]
```
These definitions should be included in the ECS task definition JSON file under the `containerDefinitions` and `volumes` sections, respectively [[1]](https://github.com/apache/incubator-devlake/blob/main/devops/releases/lake-v0.19.0/docker-compose.yml)[[2]](https://github.com/apache/incubator-devlake/blob/main/devops/releases/lake-v0.21.0/docker-compose.yml)[[3]](https://github.com/apache/incubator-devlake/blob/main/devops/releases/lake-v0.13.0/docker-compose.yml)[[4]](https://github.com/apache/incubator-devlake/blob/main/devops/releases/lake-v0.18.0/docker-compose.yml)[[5]](https://github.com/apache/incubator-devlake/blob/main/devops/releases/lake-v0.20.0/docker-compose.yml).

To convert a `docker-compose` file for deployment on AWS ECS with Fargate, you'll need to define the task definitions and services in JSON format. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to define the volumes and configure the containers with images:
### Step 1: Define Volumes in ECS Task Definition
In ECS, volumes are defined within the task definition. Here's an example of how to define volumes for the `mysql` and `grafana` services:
```json
{
"family": "devlake-task",
"networkMode": "awsvpc",
"requiresCompatibilities": ["FARGATE"],
"cpu": "512",
"memory": "2048",
"volumes": [
{
"name": "mysql-storage",
"host": null,
"dockerVolumeConfiguration": {
"scope": "task",
"autoprovision": true,
"driver": "local"
}
},
{
"name": "grafana-storage",
"host": null,
"dockerVolumeConfiguration": {
"scope": "task",
"autoprovision": true,
"driver": "local"
}
}
],
"containerDefinitions": [
{
"name": "mysql",
"image": "mysql:8.0.26",
"memory": 512,
"cpu": 256,
"essential": true,
"portMappings": [
{
"containerPort": 3306,
"hostPort": 3306,
"protocol": "tcp"
}
],
"environment": [
{ "name": "MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD", "value": "admin" },
{ "name": "MYSQL_DATABASE", "value": "lake" },
{ "name": "MYSQL_USER", "value": "merico" },
{ "name": "MYSQL_PASSWORD", "value": "merico" }
],
"mountPoints": [
{
"sourceVolume": "mysql-storage",
"containerPath": "/var/lib/mysql"
}
]
},
{
"name": "grafana",
"image": "apache/devlake-dashboard:v0.11.0",
"memory": 512,
"cpu": 256,
"essential": true,
"portMappings": [
{
"containerPort": 3000,
"hostPort": 3000,
"protocol": "tcp"
}
],
"environment": [
{ "name": "GF_USERS_ALLOW_SIGN_UP", "value": "false" },
{ "name": "GF_DASHBOARDS_JSON_ENABLED", "value": "true" },
{ "name": "GF_LIVE_ALLOWED_ORIGINS", "value": "*" },
{ "name": "MYSQL_URL", "value": "mysql:3306" },
{ "name": "MYSQL_DATABASE", "value": "lake" },
{ "name": "MYSQL_USER", "value": "merico" },
{ "name": "MYSQL_PASSWORD", "value": "merico" }
],
"mountPoints": [
{
"sourceVolume": "grafana-storage",
"containerPath": "/var/lib/grafana"
}
]
}
]
}
```
### Step 2: Configure Containers with Images
In the `containerDefinitions` section of the task definition, specify the container configurations, including the image, environment variables, and mount points. Here’s an example for the `devlake` and `config-ui` services:
```json
{
"containerDefinitions": [
{
"name": "devlake",
"image": "apache/devlake:v0.11.0",
"memory": 512,
"cpu": 256,
"essential": true,
"portMappings": [
{
"containerPort": 8080,
"hostPort": 8080,
"protocol": "tcp"
}
],
"environment": [
{ "name": "LOGGING_DIR", "value": "/app/logs" }
],
"mountPoints": [
{
"sourceVolume": "devlake-log",
"containerPath": "/app/logs"
}
]
},
{
"name": "config-ui",
"image": "apache/devlake-config-ui:v0.11.0",
"memory": 512,
"cpu": 256,
"essential": true,
"portMappings": [
{
"containerPort": 4000,
"hostPort": 4000,
"protocol": "tcp"
}
],
"environment": [
{ "name": "DEVLAKE_ENDPOINT", "value": "devlake:8080" },
{ "name": "GRAFANA_ENDPOINT", "value": "http://localhost:3002" }
]
}
]
}
```
### Step 3: Deploy the Task Definition
After defining the task definition, you can register it with ECS and create a service to run it using the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, or an Infrastructure as Code tool like Terraform.
### Additional Considerations
- **Networking**: Ensure that your ECS service is configured to use the appropriate VPC, subnets, and security groups.
- **Secrets Management**: Use AWS Secrets Manager or AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store to manage sensitive information like database passwords.
This setup will help you deploy DevLake on AWS ECS with Fargate, ensuring that the volumes and container configurations are properly defined.

To change the Grafana ports from 3002 and 3000 to match when `networkMode=awsvpc` in the ECS task definition, you need to modify the `docker-compose.yml` file. Specifically, you should update the `ports` section under the `grafana` service.
Here is the relevant section of the `docker-compose.yml` file with the updated ports:
```yaml
grafana:
image: devlake.docker.scarf.sh/apache/devlake-dashboard:v1.0.0
ports:
- "3000:3000" # Change this line to match the desired port
volumes:
- grafana-storage:/var/lib/grafana
environment:
GF_SERVER_ROOT_URL: "http://localhost:4000/grafana"
GF_USERS_DEFAULT_THEME: "light"
MYSQL_URL: "url"
MYSQL_DATABASE: "url"
MYSQL_USER: "user"
MYSQL_PASSWORD: "password"
TZ: UTC
restart: always
```
Make sure to replace `"3000:3000"` with the desired port configuration if different. This change will ensure that Grafana listens on the specified ports when using `networkMode=awsvpc` in the ECS task definition [[1]](https://github.com/apache/incubator-devlake-website/blob/main/versioned_docs/version-v0.16/GettingStarted/DockerComposeSetup.md).
