Encoding issues

I use tapestry to render a page as a String and then use that string as 
the content of a mail message.
My templates are in the usual Iso 8859-1 encoding, and so is my engine 
encoding. But things don't go as smoothly as they should. The generated 
string (after a renderpage()) is gargled with arcane characters in 
place of my accentuated characters. That is even before I even consider 
sending this by email.

I have no other problem with encoding otherwise in Tapestry. So I am a 
little disappointed with my lack of success.

Somebody knows what I should do?
