Summary: Release dates missing from Apache pages
           Product: Apache httpd-2
           Version: 2.3-HEAD
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: Documentation
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: bc-apache@vicious.dropbear.id.au

Finding out when a given Apache version was released by the Apache HTTP Server
project is at times a task worthy of Hercules.

The Announcement page on the
web site does not have it (http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/Announcement2.2.html
, http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/Announcement2.0.html ,
http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/Announcement1.3.html ).

The Changelog included with each version has not had the date of release since
November 1995.

The Announce mailing list
(http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/httpd-announce/) is inconsistent in
announcing new version; for instance, the announcement for 1.3.35 and 2.0.58 is
bundled with 2.2.2, but 1.3.34 rated its own announcement.

Given the wide usage of the Apache HTTP server, one would think that basic
information such as when a given version was released would be easier to find
out rather than slowly walking through the subversion repository's comments on
the announcement files in httpd/httpd/dist/ .

The point is that it "shouldn't be hard" to find out this information. As a
for instance, what is the URL for the canonical, dated announcement for the
1.3.32 legacy release ? 2.0.51 ?

I can (and for the subtle-bug-finding reason that started the thread) go through
the subversion repository, but that gets tiresome.

If you would like to create an html page listing the history of apache releases
by date, some people would probably be interested.

But I don't really see the big issue. The date on the announce@httpd.apache.org
archives is canonical for the official release date. This is a low traffic
list, so it shouldn't be hard to find what you want in the archives. What are
you looking for that you can't find in the archives?

Ruediger pointed out that there is an even easier place to get this information
for those who need it. You haven't really provided any argument for why having
the date as part of the release announcement is crucial. It is not there, in
general, because the release announcement is written several days before the
release and before the final release date is known. Adding the date would add
extra steps to an already complex process.
