[jira] Created: (LEGAL-21) Geronimo mysql-roller-plugin

Geronimo mysql-roller-plugin
----------------------------

                 Key: LEGAL-21
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LEGAL-21
             Project: Legal Discuss
          Issue Type: Question
            Reporter: Henri Yandell

David Jencks asks:

    * Can we have a Geronimo mysql-roller-plugin? It would allow Roller to run on Geronimo on top of the MySQL database. By default Derby would be used, but this option would allow users to choose MySQL instead. It would use Tranql, which has two classes importing MySQL classes.

------------------------------

    Resolution: Fixed

Resolving. This JIRA item marks the record of the optional/easily removed and clearly marked mysql dependency being fine.

Sam Ruby commented on LEGAL-21:

I think the word "depend" in proposed Question a) is too broad. A hard dependency that would be difficult to remove would be controversial, but an fully optional, clearly marked, and easily removed dependency is fine.

I believe that if we want to generalize this to the GPL, we need an abstraction layer, like JDBC, as well as a credible alternative; as the plugin itself may need to be GPL.

I plan to close this without adding to resolved.html the next time I pass by this issue.

I think we're at the point of not needing to record every item on resolved.html - this JIRA issue happily covers the approval for the dependency.

Use case was approved (in case there's any doubt). Open question on whether we want text on resolved.html.

Henri Yandell commented on LEGAL-21:
------------------------------------

Agreed that this is a use case we want to allow. Anyone wanting to use this would have already agreed to MySQL, or to supporting MySQL.

This wouldn't include containing the mysql jar in the download, just the linking.

Questions:

a) Do we need to say anything on resolved.html?

"Qn. Can I depend on a MySQL exception licensed work, but not ship it?"
"Ans. Yes"

b) if MySQL was purely GPL, would we be saying the same thing? ie) should we be generalizing to GPL?

Fully optional, clearly marked, and easily removed? If so, no issue here.
