[jira] Created: (BUILDR-549) Buildr cannot create a JVM using MRI on OS X 10.6 with Java Update 3 installed

Buildr cannot create a JVM using MRI on OS X 10.6 with Java Update 3 installed
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                 Key: BUILDR-549
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/BUILDR-549
             Project: Buildr
          Issue Type: Bug
          Components: Core features
    Affects Versions: 1.4.3, 1.4.2, 1.4.1
         Environment: OS X 10.6.5 with Java Update 3 for OS X 10.6; tested with 1.8.7-p174 and 1.8.7-p302, but probably any MRI will have this problem
            Reporter: Rhett Sutphin

Java Update 3 for OS X changed the way the JDK is installed on OS X and, in the process, broke RJB. With the current trunk, buildr's specs will not run. They give the error "RuntimeError : can't create Java VM". Buildfiles which invoke java have the same problem.

Allegedly, upgrading to rjb 1.3.2 will fix this problem. My initial efforts in this direction have not been successful. I'll investigate further and update this ticket.

    Attachment: trace.txt

Trace generated if one Java source file included. Build succeeds if there is NO source, but that sort of defeats the point, one might say. :)

Rhett Sutphin commented on BUILDR-549:
--------------------------------------

Yes, that's a known bug in RJB on OS X with Java Update 3 -- it's a side effect of its fallback mechanism when it is looking for the JNI headers. It looks for $JAVA_HOME/include. If that's not present, it looks for $JAVA_HOME/Home/include. If neither are present, it reports the error against the latter, making it seem buggier than it is.

I worked around the install problem in RJB 1.2.5 by finding a JDK on OS X that has the include directory ( /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0_22-b04-307.jdk/Contents/Home ) and setting JAVA_HOME to point to that. That allows RJB to install, but it still doesn't _work_ -- it still has the "can't create Java VM" problem.

Since that workaround didn't work, I started looking into getting buildr to work with a more-recent version of RJB. In version 1.3.2, RJB will install using the standard OS X path for JAVA_HOME, but it continues to have the "can't create Java VM" problem, both on its own and inside of buildr.

OK I was wondering about /Home/Home.

It is also possible to include the most recent version of the headers and add a symlink to them, and that works too. But the create JVM problem remains, even though you are referencing the lates version of the JVM. (Posted that on the developer's list a while back.)

I think that using the lates and greatest RJB would be best, as I understand they have made some improvements.
Thanks!

I managed to get buildr 1.4.3 to work under OS X 10.6.4, with Java Update 3 installed:

 - install Java Developer Package for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3 (can be downloaded from http://connect.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MemberSite.woa/wa/downloads, no direct link available)
 - change buildr's spec file to require rjb >= 1.2.5
 - install latest rjb gem
 - point JAVA_HOME to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework (I don't think it's necessary)
 - in above mentioned directory, create a symlink JavaVM and point it to Versions/Current/JavaVM (may not be necessary after developer package installation)

Ed Smiley commented on BUILDR-549:
----------------------------------

I was able to use the above information to get my installation working again. Still needs a fix, as it is a support headache, but this information was very helpful.

With the header files present in the right place and with Buildr 1.4.3 installed, and with all versions of RJB but 1.3.3 installed made the following edits:

/Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/specifications $ grep rjb buildr-1.4.3.gemspec | grep 1.2.5 # this gives all the places that originally had 1.2.5 and rjb
      s.add_runtime_dependency(%q<rjb>, [">= 1.2.5"])
      s.add_dependency(%q<rjb>, [">= 1.2.5"])
    s.add_dependency(%q<rjb>, [">= 1.2.5"])

Verified that it now invokes the compiler and can instantiate Java classes.
Here's a quick tester file
===============
VERSION_NUMBER = "1.0.0"
# Group identifier for your projects
GROUP = "maketrace"
COPYRIGHT = ""

# Specify Maven 2.0 remote repositories here, like this:
repositories.remote << "http://www.ibiblio.org/maven2/"

puts s.class
p s
# test compile
define "maketrace" do

  project.version = VERSION_NUMBER
  project.group = GROUP

and the output:

[jira] Commented: (BUILDR-549) Buildr cannot create a JVM using MRI on OS X 10.6 with Java Update 3 installed

Posted by "Rhett Sutphin (JIRA)" <ji...@apache.org>.
    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/BUILDR-549?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=12932551#action_12932551 ]

Rhett Sutphin commented on BUILDR-549:
--------------------------------------

Hi Dimitri -- I tried a similar thing. It turned out that RJB 1.3.2 would work without JAVA_HOME set (this was pointed out to me by RJB's author, Arton Tajima) or with JAVA_HOME set the way you have it. Setting it to other values would cause the "can't create Java VM" problem, while setting it to nothing would prevent buildr from running.

The symlink you describe in your last point was indeed already present on my system with the Java Developer package installed.

I think that setting JAVA_HOME to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework might cause problems later on (since it isn't actually a JAVA_HOME), but fortunately Anton has released RJB 1.3.3 which doesn't care about JAVA_HOME on OS X. The caveat with RJB 1.3.3 is that it includes a darwin-specific pre-built binary, but that binary will only work with the built-in ruby. If you are using a different one (e.g., from RVM, Macports, etc.) you should be able to install the platform-independent version like so:

$ gem install --platform ruby rjb -v 1.3.3

I've tried running buildr's specs with this version of RJB and they all pass, save a couple which I believe are currently expected to fail.

For the developers: can you update buildr's RJB dependency to 1.3.3? I would provide a patch, but it's just a two line change.

Rhett Sutphin commented on BUILDR-549:
--------------------------------------

Just to be clear, this is definitely an RJB issue, not a buildr issue. You can reproduce it with just

$ ruby -rrubygems -e 'require "rjb"; Rjb::load'
-e:1:in `load': can't create Java VM (RuntimeError)
	from -e:1

The question is what buildr needs to do to get a functioning version of rjb on OS X. I'm still seeing the problem using rjb 1.3.2, so I'm trying to figure out if there's also an environmental component.

For the record, I got it to work using the above fix. Environment as follows:

- Snow Leopard (10.6.4) with Java Update 3
- rjb-1.3.3-universal-darwin-10 (no other versions of rjb installed)
- buildr-1.4.4 built from branch @ r1036990

Ed Smiley commented on BUILDR-549:
----------------------------------

Uninstalling Buildr and reinstalling requires the RJB gem.

If I uninstall rjb and then do
 sudo env JAVA_HOME=$JAVA_HOME gem install --version 1.2.5 rjb

It will look for the include files in /Home/Home!

extconf.rb:40:in `open': No such file or directory - /Library/Java/Home/Home/include (Errno::ENOENT)
	from extconf.rb:40

(This is _after_ installing the developer kit which is supposed to supply the include files.)
