deploymentType

In a given plan, "dependencies" and "imports" are both of type 
"DependencyType".  What does it mean to have a maven style dependency 
declared for an "import"?  Is this even applicable?  I see that 
dependencies are common libraries defined as a URI or a maven artifact.  
I wasn't sure if the "maven style" way of defining a DependencyType are 
was applicable to an import element.  Could someone explain?
