Resolution to move Synapse to the Attic

In March, there was a vote in progress among the PMC to move Synapse to the Attic. It stalled when someone put their hand up to help, but that does not appeared to have provided what was needed to spur activity.

The Attic home page [1] contains some details about its purpose - it is the destination for Apache projects that can no longer provide oversight or muster votes for a release. It isn't a reflection on the contributors or the codebase, and is intended to be non-impacting to users.

For the project to continue, a plan for the following is needed:
- to obtain at least 3 PMC members willing and able to actively oversee the project
- an individual able to submit a board report on behalf of the project
- to respond to external inquiries and security issues in a timely manner
- to be able to produce a release when needed

Would the project like to conclude the earlier vote and submit an Attic resolution at this time?

Regards,
Brett (on behalf of the ASF Board)

Re: Resolution to move Synapse to the Attic

Posted by Ravi Undupitiya <ra...@gmail.com>.
Hi Hiranya/Isuru,

I volunteered a few months back but I was unable to contribute time due to
some personal affairs. I would still like to help out, and I've already
begun to do so by contributing a few fixes:
    - https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SYNAPSE-1004
    - https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SYNAPSE-1006

Please do have a look through them.

Thanks,
Ravi

Re: Resolution to move Synapse to the Attic

Hi Dushan,

Sounds good to me. I’ll leave it to you, Ravi and the others to prioritize the PTT issues appropriately and figure out which fixes should be included in the next release. We don’t have to try and fix everything for the next release. Just the ones that can be considered absolute blockers. Other fixes/improvements can be brought into Synapse trunk post release.

Thanks,
Hiranya

Re: Resolution to move Synapse to the Attic

Posted by Dushan Abeyruwan <du...@gmail.com>.
Hi Folks,
I just had a closer look at the PTT level changes compared with WSO2 ESB
4.8.1 tag i.e synapse 2.1.2-wso2v4 with apache-synapse trunk [1] (lastest
checkout)[image: Inline image 1]

so, there are some changes (in fact most of them can easily push for apache
synapse trunk), I'm not quite sure we have everything captured because
apache project was at idle state for a while, thus, volunteers could help
us identifying them and *prepare patches if necessary where those were not
reported to apache project.*
From my personal Pov all the changes having great impact towards PTT
level stabilization

AFAIK, some critical fixes are provided as patches by Senduran, if others
could help in some way that would be great.

*Bug SYNAPSE-1015*
Message building fails at high concurrency when the outsequence is content

Hiranya Jayathilaka Senduran Major OPEN Unresolved 23/May/16 28/May/16

Any objection

Hi Vanji,

I will spend some time on this today. For now lets treat anything reported as a bug in the PT transport as a blocker.

Thanks,
Hiranya

Re: Resolution to move Synapse to the Attic

Posted by Isuru Udana <is...@gmail.com>.
Hi Ravi,

Thanks a lot for volunteering to be the RM for next release.
We first need to work on grant you commit rights.

For the release,
- We don't need to fix many issues, but I would like to get few more fixes
into passthrough transport to make it more stable.
- I upgraded axis2 and axiom versions yesterday and changed neethi version
to latest released one.
- We need to decide on woden version as we are depending on woden trunk at
the moment
- Then it is all about going through the release process

Thank you.

Hi Isuru,

Since no one has volunteered for RM role, I would like to volunteer. But it
would be great to get some help with prioritizing the JIRA issues.

Thanks,

Re: Resolution to move Synapse to the Attic

Posted by Isuru Udana <is...@gmail.com>.
Hi Buddima, Viraj and Prabath,

Thank you for your enthusiasm on contributing to the project.
I hope one of you can take the RM role to get the next release out.
I may not able to drive the release, but I can help you guys by providing
fixes, reviewing fixes, etc.

@Hiranya,
I think it is too early to decide on the PMC chair position. I hope you can
take care of duties at least till we get the project back to a good
position again. I can help/submit reports when you are not available.

Thanks.

Hi Viraj, Buddhima and Prabath,

Can you point out any JIRAs or patches that you have worked on (you can create a few if you intend to work on something new in the near future)? I would like to start working on getting you guys committership.

@All
Any takers for the PMC chair position? Your main duty is to submit quarterly board reports. No in-depth technical knowledge/experience regarding Synapse is necessary.

Hi,

I have been working with Apache Synapse code for nearly 2 years and now I
have a fair understanding of the code base as well. It is sad to see that
the project moving to Attic.
I would like to contribute to this project by providing code fixes and I
can also help to make a release happen.

Thank you,
