   Good catch. This scenario didn't occur to me as I was thinking mainly about Kafka. 
   Anyway, I was hoping to avoid fetching stream metadata in case of issue connecting to stream, but I guess I need to do so to cover this case as well as the ones neha was pointing out. I'll refactor today or tomorrow (I just got back from vacation).
