I use james from some time. I use it for my personal email on my personal server. I have used mbox inbox repository beacuse I like use an "open" format.
I have noted that email with attach that are some mbyte in size will make the pop3 server very slow even to simply list email ...

You should try to use the versions listbox much more!
I guess you're you still on 2.2.0, is this right?? When you forget to
say the james server version you use you're missing the MOST important
piece of your bug report!

Fix Version/s: 3.0-M2

POP3 and IMAP now use an other Mailbox api which makes such things much faster as it not need to load all messages into memory first.
