batik-1.5 binary on RH8.0 compile question

Hi:  Please walk me through the steps to clean this up.  I'm using RH8.0
and the batik-1.5.zip download from
http://apache.secsup.org/dist/xml/batik

Any help appreciated. I know zip about java.  Also, I don't know what
the command is to id the java version.
